For Waimea, it was a repeat. For Waipahu, it was a return to the top for the first time since 2018. The Menehunes from the Garden Isle topped Kamehameha-Maui 31-28 on Saturday night for their second straight state Division II football title. That game was the opener of a doubleheader at the Mililani High field. In the nightcap, Waipahu rallied in the second half to secure a 53-28 victory over defending champion Konawaena for the state D-I championship. With Kahuku’s backs firmly against the wall, Diezel Kamoku returned a punt 86 yards for a touchdown to give the Red Raiders a 21-19 victory over Mililani for their third straight state Open Division championship on Friday night at the T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. That play happened with 2:59 left. For Kahuku fans, it was reminiscent of Toriano Taulogo’s 62-yard punt return with 23 seconds left that led to the Red Raiders’ 2003 27-26 state title win over Saint Louis. Four teams advanced to Hawaii football state championship games with semifinal wins Saturday night. Three will make a return trip — Konawaena, Waipahu and Waimea. Next Saturday, Konawaena will take on Waipahu in a rematch of last season’s Division I title game, which was won by the Wildcats 38-28. Mililani is No. 1 in the polls now, and Kahuku is the reigning two-time state Open champion, The rivals will meet in the championship game next Friday at the T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. On Friday night in a semifinal doubleheader at the Trojans’ home field, Mililani rolled over Campbell 44-7 and Kahuku proved to be too much for Punahou, 28-16. There are two weekends left in the Hawaii high school football season, with the upcoming state tournament semifinals and finals of the Open Division, Division I and D-II. Four teams advanced over the weekend with first-round wins. On Saturday, Kapaa won a D-I thriller over Lahainaluna, 29-28, thanks to Evan Daligdig’s late 48-yard touchdown reception of a Kapono Na-o pass followed by Na’o’s 3-point conversion run.
