Zola is the founder of naturalism, a movement that stems from realism. It advocates social determinism and expresses things as they are, as realism already did.  Thérèse Raquin tells the story of a girl born of a relationship between an Algerian woman and a French soldier during the Algerian war who has been entrusted to her aunt who lives in the French countryside. Zola describes Thérèse as a girl who has always had a feisty character and has kept her wild side in check throughout her childhood because she had to behave like an exemplary girl as her aunt taught her. She is destined from ..read more

Molière was a 17th century playwright and actor who left his mark on the French language. He wrote Le médecin malgré Lui or ”the doctor in spite of himself”. It is one of his hilarious and satirical literary works. He is one of the few writers of his time who was not censored or executed despite his works criticizing the mores of society and especially of high society. He was able to criticize the king and his court as well as the bourgeoisie without forgetting the scientists who, according to him, were useless. Indeed, his mother died when she was ill and he was very angry at the doctors who ..read more

Set in three time periods, 1935 England, Second World War England and France, and present-day England, it covers an upper-class girl’s half-innocent mistake that ruins lives, her adulthood in the shadow of that mistake, and a reflection on the nature of writing. In the heat wave that hits England in August 1935, the young Briony has found her vocation: she will be a novelist. At the age of thirteen, she sees the novel as a way to decipher the world. But when she surprises her older sister Cecilia with Robbie, a servant’s ..read more

“MITI E LEGGENDE DELL’ETA’ CLASSICA” is an excellent book to discover the tales of the past. It is specially designed for a young audience. Myths were born and spread by ancient peoples, to explain natural phenomena (the origin of the universe, fire, constellations, wind, rain…). Even if they seem unlikely stories to us, ancient peoples, lacking scientific knowledge and instruments, believed that they were true stories. Mythological tales, as we know, are characterized by incredible adventures, prodigious creatures and fascinating situations, with men and gods as protagonists. The latter ..read more

John Patrick McEnroe is doubtlessly the man who changed the tennis world tradition. What once was the self-restrained and elitist game of the upper classes was then doomed to become an amazing TV show a mass audience would pay for. But beyond his endless and legendary quarrel with the referee on duty, McEnroe put in the play his impressive and surprising talent. Every shot was a coup de théâtre and every ball too close to the line, a show within the show. And there were his counterparts too. His matches against Björn Borg, Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi, Pat Cash and last but not least I ..read more
