Appeal play

What happens if an umpire, during a live ball appeal, didn’t see the runner who missed the base so the umpire does not call him out, obviously the fielder before make an appeal, but when the action is relaxed the umpire calls time, or without calling time, and, after reviewing the action, he decides to call the runner out? That is after he makes a decision while the action is in progress, could he after decide otherwise? Or can the fielder appeal again ..read more

Or baseball is just changing to the point where it isn’t really baseball any more. Used to be fans loved to argue forever over niggling little rule details. Today, they can’t even sit through 10 innings. But it was a great run while it lasted ..read more

R1, 1 out, ball hit to deep center field and very difficult to catch. However, the centerfielder makes a spectacular diving catch ending up near the wall. Meanwhile R1 has already passed 2B and thus needs to get back to 1B. A throw from the centerfielder would never get there in time after getting up from the ground. For some reason, perhaps thinking he made the 3rd out, or perhaps he is very smart, the centerfielder throws the ball into the crowd before R1 has crossed 2B on his way back to 1B.

What would the ruling be?
<p class=”p ..read more

15/20 seconds or 8 seconds?
Baseball Rules Forum
by Mark Astolfi

I’m confused by the new pitch clock rule. The pitcher has 15 seconds to begin his next pitch (20 seconds with runners on base.) But since the batter doesn’t have to be in the batter’s box until only 8 seconds are left, wouldn’t the pitcher in that case have only 8 seconds to begin his next pictch, since he can’t begin his delivery with an empty batter’s box ..read more

Fourth Out in Pirates-Nationals Game
Baseball Rules Forum
by Bob Portman

I would love for you to post and interview the umpire involved on the no-call of the fourth out in the Pirates-Nationals game earlier this year (July 28 or 29). With runners on second and third, a Pirate hit low line-out to Josh Bell at first who threw to third. Both runners took off on contact assuming it was trapped and advance to the next base (or home). Third baseman tagged the runner from second who was now on third and then stepped on the bag. Umpire correctly call the runner from second who was now on third OUT! No one left the field, as the Pirates’ manager came out to veri ..read more
