The 17th Seed

A blog for my periodic bracket projections for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. This is my attempt to project the bracket for the NCAA Tournament. I have loved college basketball since I was a kid in Syracuse, NY, rooting for the likes of Pearl Washington and Sherm Douglas and Billy Owens.

So below is our pair of seed lists. We have one for a UAB victory (UAB as a 13) and one for a Temple victory (Temple as a 15). I think that the Big Ten finalists will hold their positions regardless of result.
Where did we struggle? First, on Duke v Auburn for the last 3. Very close call for us, but while Duke didn't help themselves (at all), Auburn didn't beat anyone ahead of or level with them (say, Alabama, Tennessee, or Kentucky) so it wasn't quite enough to move them up a line.
Second, on Clemson. I don't think they deserve the 6 I gave them, but their profile just looked better than the ..read more

As of mid-day, Friday, March 15th.
A few notes about this.
I think Tennessee's loss costs them the last 1-seed. I think that UNC has an easier path to winning the ACC than Arizona does to the Pac 12 title. If Arizona wins and UNC gets upset, they get the last 1. If they both win... it's going to be close.
I think Nevada will probably get passed, by Wisconsin or maybe TTU for that last 5.
I dropped Seton Hall out, did not think their metrics were good enough. I like Providence more than them right now after comparing their team sheets.
Virginia is in a bad spot drawing NCST, a team ..read more

Here's the seed list for March 8th. Tennessee gets the fourth 1-seed for now, and would be sent out West...where Arizona will be waiting anyway. I'm thinking Marquette holds on to that last 2 for the moment. The Mountain West is good this year and I think SDST will get a 4-seed, but not quite yet. The 12's are going to be a handful this year, as will some of the 13s. I guess that's not really news, but those are some really good teams!

Hello, first (published) list of the season here for the 17th Seed. Worked hardest on the top 16 and the bubble, did less work on the muddled middle. Wanted to see how the top 16 compared to the Committee's on Saturday.
Here's a link to the list.

So I updated this week's bracket and we took a longer look at the Bubble. The Observer article is available at https://www.observertoday.com/sports/local-sports/2020/02/a-closer-look-at-the-bubble-teams/.
The bubble is very much in the eye of the beholder, but my goal isn't to put out there who I think deserves to be in the tournament. It's to project who the Committee will put in. In my wish-bracket, teams like Georgetown and NC State would be replaced by the likes of East Tennessee State and Liberty. I am a big believer in giving mid-major programs more opportunities. So-so major con ..read more

Ok so I didn't do a full-blown update as I went. But here's the final bracket. I'm wondering if I'm too high on SD State and Loyola, but those are good teams that the NET seems to like. It won't surprise me if Loyola in particular ends up an 8 instead. The 8/9 lines were tough to place. I know I violated some bracketing principles, but Iowa and Maryland only played once, and other than dropping them a line (which might've been ok), I'm not sure I had a choice. I know that Wisconsin and Michigan State are a little close together too. Tough to jam these guys in the way it shook out.

So here's this week's bracket. I bumped the Aztecs to the top line after Duke's two losses this week. I imagine that Duke could take back that spot with a few wins, even if SDST stays undefeated, since the Blue Devils have a tough schedule. Butler also took a step back this week. Maybe the Aztecs weren't the best choice to move up, but I wasn't sold on anyone else.
Lots of upsets, so that shakes things up. It's amazing how much churning is going on at almost every level. Almost makes me think Syracuse can crawl back onto the bubble if things go right. Almost ..read more

Here's my final projections. I'm assuming Purdue and Houston both win, but probably wouldn't change it even if either lost. They were among the harder teams to gauge. The bubble was tough, rejected ND and Rutgers at the very end.
And here's the bracket pairings ..read more

Been awhile. I'm posting my seed list going into Championship Week. Looking forward to seeing how all this plays out. Some thoughts:
1. Still don't think Michigan and Illinois swap spots... yet.
2. Like Ohio State to drop a line at this point. Four L's in a row... and I'll take the Razorbacks to move up at the moment.
3. Bubble needs to be scrubbed soon. Not liking Xavier or Seton Hall to make it. Wish there was better news for Drake.
4. The Orange probably need two wins to feel safe and would be helped by an early GT loss.
5. Feeling that VCU and Bonaventure are both safe regardle ..read more
