Just saw on the news that the Baltimore light rail has been shut down until they can fix the LRVs so that they don't blow up. Something about "high voltage conduit." Apparently there was an explosion last October, which makes you wonder why they waited over a month to do something ..read more

A CTA Yellow Line train ran into other CTA equipment (a snowplow) in Howard Yard today, injuring several. Tribune article
For those puzzling how an operating train with passengers ended up in the yard, the Yellow Line tracks go through the yard to get from the Yellow Line proper (ex-Skokie Swift, nee North Shore Line) to Howard terminal station. Ditto with the Purple Line.
My sheer guess is the Yellow train was where it was supposed to be but the plow wasn't. CTA's game either way ..read more

Preliminary information led police to believe a car was damaged in a single-car, non-injury crash on the freeway due to suspected speeding.
After the crash, two people in the car jumped over the barrier to retrieve a car part that was in the TriMet restricted area. Both were hit by the train.
Portland Police are investigating the incident and I-84 was closed for around six hours in all westbound lanes between northeast 43 avenue and I-5.

"Metrolink trains will be out of service for four days starting on Tuesday, December 26 through Friday, December 29."
This will affect ALL trains at LA Union Station, including Amtrak. Metrolink dispatches/maintains the tracks at LA Union Station so this will affect ALL trains at LA Union Station, including Amtrak.
Amtrak trains (Coast Starlight, SW Chief, Sunset Limited) show "sold out" during that week. I see Pacific Surfliner trains available so perhaps they will operate a...

The MBTA on Thursday disclosed yet another problem in the troubled rollout of its new subway cars, saying it is taking its new-model Orange Line cars — 64 in all — out of service after a brake unit in one car malfunctioned.

I have a trip to NYC scheduled in November with a few free days when I can take scenic day train rides. I’ve never been anywhere on Long Island beyond Jamaica. Is either of the long routes to the east end of the island especially scenic? I love watching the world go by out a train window and I’m curious is this would be one decent way to do that ..read more

My wife and I just came home from a trip that ended with 2-3 days in Las Vegas. We stayed at the Sahara, which is on the Monorail. Seeing the traffic on the Strip/Las Vegas Blvd., we chose to see the other casinos, go to dinner, etc. by Monorail. The fare is NOT cheap, although there's a significantly reduced fare for Nevada residents. We paid $47.50 for two 2-day unlimited passes, and it would have been a bit more if we insisted on paper tickets!
The Monorail is significantly faster...
