As I write this I’m sitting on my deck in the early morning overlooking the water in False Creek Vancouver B.C Canada. There is something magical about this place. There is no doubt it’s beautiful. But beautiful places abound. It’s the energy of these mountains and this city that inspires me. It get’s my creative juices flowing and the urge to create bubbles up inside of me. It's weird to say, but I can feel it .. in my core ,,, my cells. As artists I think we frequently wonder about the origin of a good idea. We want to know where creativity comes from in others, how it comes about because if ..read more

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR ENCAUSTIC

An encaustic paint film is stable in a temperature range of approximately 40-120°F. Wax is more fragile in the cold and becomes extremely brittle in freezing temperatures. If you would drop the painting is cold temperatures it will shatter. The paintings will begin to shift at 120°F. The wax begins to be workable at 150°F, and it becomes liquid at 162°F. Very hot days can soften the wax somewhat, but will cause no real damage. If you must transport the painting in hot or cold weather simply first cover the entire wax surface with wax paper, then cardboard, and some form of insulation. When tha ..read more

What exactly is Encaustic art ?

Encaustic is a Greek word meaning “to heat or burn in” (enkaustikos). Heat is used throughout the process, from melting the beeswax and varnish to fusing the layers of wax. Encaustic consists of natural bees wax and dammar resin (crystallized tree sap). The medium can be used alone for its transparency or adhesive qualities or used pigmented. Pigments may be added to the medium, or purchased colored with traditional artist pigments. The medium is melted and applied with a brush or any tool the artist wishes to create from. Each layer is then reheated to fuse it to the previous layer. History ..read more

The new year brings a new body of work and a new direction for me . My new works are based on life’s imperfections and how it all relates back to beauty. Life is so imperfect but there is that magic in how it all comes together. My art style is composition of imperfection and how to embrace it , rather than question it. And at the end, you look at it, and see beauty through it all. My style is heavily influenced by mid century modern and I love minimalism, simplicity, clean negative space. A little background story : I have always painted, and I’m captivated by good design, I love working with ..read more

Hello 2018 !

As I sit and reflect on 2017 my head spins as I analyze my year, there are simply no boundaries and limits to what an artist can do. We pour out our emotions and feelings on canvas and these emotions can be understood by those admiring their creations. This is how we communicate, our way of expression and interpretation of life. I started 2017 thinking I would just try to participate in 1 art show and see what happened. It was a ride to say the least. Standing there beside my work I felt like I was naked , my inner voice screamed "HOLY CRAP now I have to explain what was in my head when I was ..read more

New Beginnings

I do believe that uncertainty is a vital part of making art. Starting something new, how are we to know what will come of it? “Is it going to work? Where will it lead? Will it be crap? Why am I even doing this?…” That is the sort of thinking that tends to take over when I start new things. It’s a vulnerable feeling. But here’s the thing: without risk and exploration, things go stale. Art requires movement. It requires progression. It requires risk. It requires action. As I sit at a stand still waiting to move in to my new studio space I feel like I am against a wall with no where to move, So I ..read more

Thanks to everyone who came out to say hi and visit the studio at this year's Eastside Culture Crawl! This is easily one of my favourite events in Vancouver, but it's the first time I've ever participated as an artist. This is the 3rd time I've shown my work in the flesh and the experience was tremendously gratifying. After watching the expressions on people faces while they viewd my work I would ask them if they had seen encaustic art before 99% replied "No" & were amazed when I explained what is was. I met some really interesting people and had some great conversations. I strongly encoura ..read more

Reduces Stress, Increases Productivity, and Boosts Morale Regardless of how enjoyable a job may be, there will always be stressful days, weeks, or even months.
