3 Human Artists making Human Art By Tyra Schad If you’ve been on the internet lately, you’ve most likely heard about the recent boom in AI-generated content. This new technology has caused much debate on the future of many occupations, particularly ones that rely on human creativity. Artists like myself suddenly fear redundancy more than ever. This fear and contempt surrounding the sudden explosion of AI art software is undeniably warranted. Artists have faced redundancy before, but never in such an overwhelming way.  But hold on, I’m sure you’ve heard enough about AI already. This artic ..read more

A Peek into the Kids Take Over Exhibit at The Vancouver Art Gallery By Tyra Schad A substantial portion of The Vancouver Art Gallery’s visitors are young students and children, yet it seems as though they have been left out of the fray. Often art is perceived as a complicated subject containing cultural history, advanced visual symbols, and complex backgrounds—even to an adult viewer, certain genres of art can be intimidating.  This doesn’t have to be the case. The Vancouver Art Gallery’s most recent third-floor exhibit, aptly titled, Kids Take Over, applies the written and visual respons ..read more

My schedule this term has been pretty busy and on top of that the current COVID restrictions in place have made it even more difficult to find and support local art in person. Fortunately there are amazing people like the curator and founder of The Art Shop, Mariana Rivera, who worked relentlessly during these trying times to gather a talented group of local painters to display their work.   In this 3rd pop up installation: I in Paint, Mariana beautifully showcases 12 artists and five local businesses. Each artist was asked to reflect on their gender identity and share their experiences w ..read more

Reflections on a tour of AI: The Imitation Game with the curator

By Tyra Schad I recently had the privilege to tour the Vancouver Art Gallery’s newest exhibit AI:The Imitation Game: Visual Culture In The Age Of Artificial Intelligence with one of its fantastically accomplished curators, Glenn Entis. Despite the ample information available to the patrons of the gallery, hearing about the specifics of each work from the man who helped select and prepare this exhibit gave me a new level of respect for the show. Retrospectively, I selected a few works which stood out to me as uniquely thought-provoking.  AI:The Imitation Game has a number of works from dif ..read more

Lani paints in a contemporary style that reflects aspects of illustration, graphics, and street art. She focuses on large-scale oil and acrylic paintings depicting an entourage of female characters. The strong, often defiant characters she creates, touch on themes of female identity and sexual fantasy, while posing commentary on the contradictions evoked by media environments and visual messaging. Lani has exhibited in many cities in Canada as well as Mexico and the United States, including Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal, Halifax, San Francisco, Baltimore, Portland, and San Jose Del Cabo. A Chat With nicenothings®

don't like. don't subscribe. find your own way thru it all. see you on the road.” a chat with nicenothings® By Stick Vancouver I first came across nicenothings® the way I’m sure many people in the city have. A small smiling face painted on the pavement, or unexpected object. To me it felt like a little joke between me and whoever put it there. Small enough that only I picked up on it, but out in the open for anyone. Over the years I kept coming across them until one day I came across the actual artist nicenothings®. I had a chance to ask a few questions about what making street art i ..read more
