Last weekend, we grabbed our masks and jumped in an Uber to view three art exhibitions we were eager to see. We were dropped off at 950 E. Cordova Street, amidst a scene that can only be described as some sort of hybrid of a Mad Max clip and a Turner landscape. The street was empty, we were surrounded by industrial buildings, warehouses and a blanket of wildfire smoke. As we exited the car, approached the metal door and pushed it with a little hesitation, we read CJ.  We must admit that we felt a little intimidated to enter the large, well thought out, stunning gallery. Once we were in ..read more

Linda Männel was born in Hausham, a bucolic village amidst the mountains of Bavaria, Germany. By the age of eleven, her fifth-grade teacher could already see her creative attributes and assured Linda that her path was that of an artist. Upon finishing her high school studies, Linda joined the Bauhaus to learn diverse skills with wood, glass and textile. From 2003 to 2005, she joined the Nürnberg Academy of Fine Arts where professor Diet Sayler addressed the practice of Concrete Art; a movement that calls for an art that is non-referential to the entities normally encountered in the natural ..read more

On unattained spacewalks and skirt parachutes: Two exhibitions in North Vancouver have been making us look upwards into the sky and out into Space.  We recently organized a gallery hop in North Vancouver with which we visited ‘Cloud Album’ at Polygon Gallery and ‘I wanted to go on a Space Walk but I had nothing to wear’ at CityScape Community ArtSpace. Although we inevitably read unintended commonalities between both exhibitions (like the close links between art and science and the human fascination with measuring and documenting what we perceive and see) each exhibition taught us dif ..read more

"The Vancouver art ecosystem is built on a delicate balance of interconnected elements: artists, collectors, galleries, and institutions. Each is equally important in the process of nurturing a rich, diverse art scene." Lisa Baldissera Tania Willard Domestic Markets (from SnowBank & other Investments series), 2020 acrylic mounted photo paper, silk ribbon, metal chain, birchbark, dyed deer tail, laser etching, 56 x 81cm via UNIT 17 While Art Basel Miami Beach (Dec 2-4) continues to become less and less about the Art and increasingly morphs into a chimeric annual spectacle, COMBINE Art ..read more

We can’t think of better refuge than art. In both the literal and figurative way. During the past months, we’ve felt psychological comfort and emotional appeasement by engaging with artworks, artists and gallerists. We’ve also felt safe in their art spaces since we are generally able to maintain a generous distance and their attention to sanitary measures have exceeded our expectations.  During a time where we lost the pleasures of the nightlife, cinema and IRL performances, we feel extremely lucky and grateful to be able to continue to experience other art forms in person.  Back i ..read more

Ruminations of light in the dark

Light is one of the most fascinating physical phenomena. Ask both a physicist and a chemist to explain what light is and the exchange will quickly turn into a metaphysical discussion. They would tell you light is electromagnetic radiation behaving both as a wave and a particle. They would state that nothing moves faster than light. That there is a large spectrum of light in the universe but that the human eye can only perceive a very limited amount of that range. To this they would add that the distance between each wave allows our eyes to create colour in our brains and that even when it is ..read more

We are head over heels in love with how the arts adapted during and post-quarantine. Over the past three months, we have closely followed how artists, galleries and cultural institutions increased their online presence by hosting virtual showrooms, studio visits, concerts, plays and exhibitions. Being able to stay connected to the arts to explore the vast offerings that artists present from across the world has been enriching to say the least. Not only has it helped us stay grounded but it has also exponentially increased our exposure to the important issues that artists are exploring and sh ..read more

Amidst Vancouver Downtown high rises and busy streets, the next generation of photographers nourish their work at Studio Seven-thirty on Richards Street. This location oscillates between photography studio, video production sets and gallery space. It’s a place where you can find yourself attending an art exhibit, a book launch, a seminar or even a photography class or workshop. Studio Seven-thirty is run by artist, Marpole resident and cocktail enthusiast, Dan Jackson. Like many of us, Jackson has had to pause his business and is doing his part to keep our community safe by isolating i ..read more
