An Aquastar is a True Star

I had two divers in my collection: the Rolex Sea-Dweller 116600 and the Seiko Marinemaster 300 SBDX001. Both watches are fabulous in their own right, but they share a similar style and feel on the wrist. I was lusting for something fresh and different. So, I bid farewell to the Marinemaster and welcomed the Aquastar Deepstar 39mm Reissue chronograph. Aquastar, as a brand, and specifically the Deepstar, have a rich heritage in dive watches, and the reissue remains faithful to the original design. The 39mm reissue falls in size between the original 37mm version and the 40.5mm 2020 reissue. The l ..read more

I really like the archetypal Monnin case (some would say “cased,” with another company, M.R.P., also likely deserving some credit). There are actually a few different Monnin cases that were used by a range of brands back in the day, though the originating Heuer 844 (“Jumbo”) is the most iconic. The same or very similar design continues to be fairly popular, likely best exemplified by CWC’s range of divers (though these tend to be discussed with reference to their military issuance rather than their Monnin cases being specifically highlighted). What I had not come across until recently was a mo ..read more

Owner review: I sold my Moonwatch

I wrote this review, sold the watch, and only then actually hit submit on this review. I felt it necessary to start with this disclaimer because I didn’t want this essay to be thought of as an ad for my decidedly pedestrian Omega Speedmaster Professional. I have already moved it, and I’m satisfied with what I got for it, all in the pursuit of the next watch (Sorry, Roman!). So then, how does one review a watch one wants to sell? What preoccupies the mind in the lead up to the sale: Why sell? Why sell now? Why sell wherever the listing was made? Why risk the remorse of hindsight? The Moonwatch ..read more

Owner review: Sinn U50-T

I was looking for a toolish dive watch that wasn’t just an homage that looked like so many other dive watches. I’ve been a fan of Sinn’s aesthetics and their watches in general (after owning a few over the years). Although I have always been partial to the U1, I could never get comfortable with its given specs on my smaller wrist. Enter the Sinn U50-T. When the U50 was announced, I was excited. It had an upgraded movement from the U1 (in the SW 300-1) and more compact case measurements (with a 41mm diameter, 47mm lug-to-lug, and 11.5mm height). All this was at the sacrifice of 500m of water re ..read more
