Live Free or Die was a bumper sticker I resonated with long ago. I wanted my own way in all matters, and I never liked authority or constrictive people or clothes. I do wish to write from the heart, of my experience, strength and hope. Actually, in the middle of this first draft I rolled off my chair and did some stretches. I just searched/prayed deeply, for the words to give meaning to the significance of this topic. It has been and remains the most important and precious decision to live a life of sobriety, sanity and serenity for me…bar none and no matter what happens, good, bad or indiffe ..read more

Cocaine. A gateway to self-love until it no longer serves its purpose. A high that will never be as good as the first. A Band-Aid on life that can’t stop the bleeding. From the outside looking in, it might seem farfetched for a middle-class boy like Brian to end up battling bulimia for decades, an alcoholic, and hooked on cocaine. But, as much as society wants to label and define what things should or should not look like, addiction doesn’t have a type. The gold pants. Those gold pants were gifted to Brian from his cool, entrepreneurial, older brother, Mark Cuban, and now it was Brian’s turn ..read more

In early recovery, I was introduced to the concept of recovery advocacy by an old timer who had been there and back again. I remember my first thoughts about the topic: “You mean I can talk openly about my addiction and recovery?...and this will actually help people?” I couldn’t believe that some people shared about their addiction and mental health recovery in public, outside of church basements and in the light of day. It made me queasy. This old timer, a woman who would later become my mentor, told me about the power of storytelling and the importance of smashing the stigma of addiction. S ..read more

*Originally appearing in Issue #58, Sept 2019 (Sugar Ray Leonard Cover), Page 23 “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, ...break forth into joyous song and sing praises!” –Psalm 98:4 We are all familiar with soundtracks, they set the emotional tone of a scene. As soon as the music enters our ears, our mood naturally corresponds. It could be suspenseful, comedic, or heroic. We feel the emotions and begin to anticipate exactly what the storyteller has intended. Similar to the effect a soundtrack has on a scene, so does everything reflect our attitude. You mentally and verbally influence everything i ..read more

Five Surprising Things That Relapse Can Teach Us By Beverly Conyers

When my daughter relapsed after six years of sobriety, it took her less than five months to lose everything she had worked so hard for: her job, her savings, her good credit rating, and – most damaging – her self-respect. “How could I have done this to myself?” she cried when the fog had lifted enough for her to see the wreckage. “How could I have been so stupid?” She – and I – had believed that her drug days were over. We thought she had moved on, built a new life, and left her old destructive ways behind. Now, we both faced the stark reality that addiction is seldom completely “in the past ..read more
