Layoffs coming to RBC (and maybe other banks)?

After RBC's latest earnings release this week, these quotes from Dave McKay caught my eye: Compensation costs jumped 15 per cent, boosted by a 20 per cent increase in salaries and benefits. Mr. McKay said that RBC reacted “strongly” to compete during staffing shortages last year, when technology companies hired aggressively. Now that the tight labour market is easing, he expects to trim costs as hiring slows and some employees leave the bank. “We had to respond to that with aggressive hiring and anticipating high turnover rates persisting into the first half of 2023,” Mr. McKay said. “Well ..read more

I am looking for full time jobs in the US which will allow remote work anywhere in the world. I work in an industry where most of the jobs are in the US. I am Canadian and currently live in Toronto. I want some sense of job security so I don't want to take the contracting route. It is also my career goal to be engaged with the company and not work on a temp basis. I want this sense of belonging and to grow with a company. I find that it has been difficult for any US companies to give me a full-time position. Most often, they do not have a Canadian business entity to do the payroll. Sometimes ..read more

Hiring process - government of Canada

Hi everyone, I had an interview at the government of Canada three weeks ago and I have not heard back anything. I am an external applicant for an indeterminate position (not a student position). I am very worried that I was screened out, given that they did not specifically ask for references at this stage. I did provide them with the referees names and contact info with my application (as required), but the hiring contact person did not confirm the referees names/addresses. I do not want to bug my 3 referees about whether they were contacted or not because I know that providing references a ..read more

CIBC Associate Commercial Banking

I’m really wanting to apply for the this position because I have the educational background in accounting, retail banking experience and a general interest in commercial banking. I’ve heard great things about the CIBC commercial banking program. But I wanted to know if a lot of travel to clients is required for the Associate role. On LinkedIn I’ve seen a lot of Associates get promoted to Managers, and I know as a Relationship Manager there is a lot of travel to client offices required. I’m not too keen on driving everywhere around my city. Ideally I would love to do underwriting (more of a cre ..read more

There's the usual business rules, policies, procedures, etc. that I need to get to know. the job itself calls for 8hrs a day, should I put in some extra time getting to know the job as quickly as possible? if so what is a reasonable amount of time in your opinion? I signed a 1 year contract not too long ago which came with a commitment to convert/retain employees to full time from HR. A lot of new staff in my role >5 <10. The job itself has been great. I've done pretty well. I would like to think I stood out the most because of the quality of the work I produced. From ideation, to conceptualization to execution I think I did well. Managerial staff were pretty pleased with the results, and I never had anything questioned, not even once. A lot of my peers leaned on me for the stuff I was able to produce. But Friday, I heard the devastating news th ..read more
