FYI… I shaped and glassed my first surfboard in ’78 or ’79. I literally lived through the shortboard revolution, and always admired the fact that surfers did their own thing… pushed boundaries… lived an alternate lifestyle… didn’t care about the mainstream… and looked like they were having fun doing it. And a lot of surfers were very artistic, and many of them shapers, too. I saw that and was like… yea, I wanna do THAT.

Yes… he was Australian… during a very creative time in the evolution of the surfboard, when there was a lot of interesting people doing really out-of-ths-box things in the shaping room. The Aussies, in particular, and to a lesser degree in Southern California (although they did cross-pollinate quite a bit), were really tripping out on the whole Morning of the Earth vibe, and McCoy being the total free thinker that he is, started down a path that no one else could even imagine.
