Monthly Wrap-Up: April ’24
A Kernel of Nonsense
by Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense

Oh, April, why were you such a struggle? Spring time should feel invigorating, but I just felt sluggish. April was not a noteworthy month for me in terms of reading or blogging. I got things done, but kind of in a “but at what cost?” kind of way. I picked up six books this month. Not a big number, but it did include one title that I’ve been meaning to get to forever (Legendborn). I listened to the audiobook for this one and it was the longest audiobook I’ve ever tackled at nearly 19 hours long. And I felt it. I really wanted to post more reviews this month, but just was not able to make time t ..read more

Top Ten Tuesday: Random Things in Books That Irk Me
A Kernel of Nonsense
by Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense

Top Ten Tuesday is an original blog meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and is currently being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is “Petty Reasons You’ve DNF’d a Book.” I am not likely to put down a book over little things, but there are a number of pet peeves I have that I’ve come across in books that immediately have me putting the book down for a second or two. These range from mildly annoying to will be thinking about this periodically for the next year. About half of these focus on audiobooks because I listen to a whole lot these days and with t ..read more

Top Ten Tuesday is an original blog meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and is currently being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is “Unread Books on My Shelves I Want to Read Soon.” How much time do you have because I have way too many books on my shelf that I haven’t read yet. Since I’m already starting to sweat thinking about narrowing this number down to ten, instead I am going to list 2024 releases already out that I am hoping to read soon. Some of these are actually on my shelf, but some are titles I’m hoping to get from the library. Covers are ..read more

Top Ten Tuesday: Book Covers with Vacation Vibes
A Kernel of Nonsense

Top Ten Tuesday is an original blog meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and is currently being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is “Characters I’d Like to go on Vacation With.” I’ve honestly been reading a lot of horror lately and these are the kinds of characters milling about in my brain right now. They aren’t the first characters I think of for a list like this, so I’m changing it up a bit and going with book covers with vacation vibes. This books may or may not feature vacations. I’m going entirely on vibes though, so these feature a variety of ..read more

A few weeks ago for Top Ten Tuesday, we got to share our most anticipated spring releases. But me, being overwhelmed by all the wonderful books coming out, chose to focus on fantasy. I could not pass up the opportunity, however, to share my most anticipated contemporary releases coming this spring. I’ve split this list into Young Adult and Adult for those with more of a preference for either. I’d love to hear what other contemporary books are on your radar in the comments! Covers are linked to Goodreads. Young Adult: 1. Rules for Rule Breaking by Talia Tucker Release Date: March 19, 2024 "Bo ..read more

Top Ten Tuesday: People Defying Gravity on Book Covers
A Kernel of Nonsense

Top Ten Tuesday is an original blog meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and is currently being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is “Freebie.” You ever write or put together a blog post in your head, but then so much time passes that you become convinced you actually wrote it instead of just thinking it? I was so sure that I had already written a post about book covers where people are defying gravity. I was transferring my blog post idea notes from one app to another and came across a list of books for this topic. I initially dismissed it because I ..read more

Under the Radar: 2024 Releases by Latinx Authors
A Kernel of Nonsense
by Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense
3w ago
I am always of the opinion that books by Latinx authors are underhyped. They don’t always have a whole lot of backing from their publishers and rarely get the kind of virality that would boost sales. A lot of Latine-authored books fly under the radar and as a result are often absent from people’s TBRs. I am here today to boost ten Latine-authored books coming out this year that you may not know about. Hopefully this means you are more likely to check out these titles when they are released. Covers are linked to Goodreads. 1. The Girl, the Ring, and the Baseball Bat by Camile Gomera-Tavarez Re ..read more

Top Ten Tuesday: Bees Buzzing Around on Book Covers

Top Ten Tuesday is an original blog meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and is currently being hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic is “April Showers.” This week is a bit of a freebie where we get to decide how to interpret the prompt. When I think of spring, I think of bees working hard to pollinate are beautiful flowers and fruit trees. I feel like I haven’t read enough books about bees, but I know I’ve come across a good amount of covers with bees on them. Here are a few that have stood out to me. Covers are linked to Goodreads. After two weeks, the ..read more

Monthly Wrap-Up: March ’24
A Kernel of Nonsense
by Alicia @ A Kernel of Nonsense
1M ago
I struggled a bit in March, both reading and health wise. First I was sick, then I had a series of migraines, then I was hit by terrible asthma that lasted almost two weeks. Maybe the change in the weather triggered most of these things, I don’t know. I finally feel some kind of relief and am hoping it stays this way. I feel like March slipped through my hands at a breathtaking speed. I only got to six books this month, and (at least so far) only wrote one review. Not great, especially as I look back at how many book reviews I’ve written so far this year (it’s a very sad number). I am also sti ..read more
