Angela Weiss/AFP via Getty Images Law enforcement has a long history of profiling marginalized people, including trans individuals. These targeted practices have led to more interactions between police and trans folks, interactions that can quickly take a turn for the worse. Profiling for trans women has primarily been under the assumption that they're engaging in some sort of sex work. Among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people that interacted with police in 2021, ,over 45% reported experiencing verbal harassment. This verbal harassment often coupled with misgendering and invasive que ..read more

The System Like all Americans, transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people live within a capitalist society, in which the creation and enforcement of laws is deeply rooted in the perpetuation of wealth and class status. Further, TGNC people face substantial discrimination throughout American society, facing increased rejection in employment opportunities, housing, healthcare, and the obtaining of identity documents. The compounding of these two factors means that TGNC individuals are less likely to obtain substantial wealth or status and, therefore, are more likely to face increased en ..read more

The criminal legal system is made up of three main components: law enforcement, the court system, and corrections. Each of these areas of the system play a critical role in the process of identifying, rehabilitating, or reconciling crimes and those that commit them. However, no part of this system is without some fault in perpetuating the continued unfairness, inequality, and sometimes blatant inhumanity that occurs within this system. The area of focus in discussing issues of gender non-conforming individuals in the system is the component of corrections. The corrections component of the crim ..read more

It is hard to do." ------ Ashlee Inscoe ,Only 15 out of 4890 transgender inmates were incarcerated in prisons according to their lived gender. Policing is a heated topic, especially given the exacerbation of issues like brutality and abuses of power coming to a head in the past few years. With social media giving everyone a platform and the ability to record interactions between police and citizens, people are increasingly aware of issues with misconduct and actions that are questionable at best and illegal or deadly at worst. It's not surprising that for many transgender people, the police present risks that others may not face. It is no revelation that transgender people face harsher interactions with police that other groups of pe ..read more

Much of the discussion surrounding LGBTQ people and the criminal legal system focuses on criminalization. The 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, shows reports of frequent harassment, profiling, and abuse from police. The criminalization of poverty and homelessness along with the high rates of poverty among the trans community ,puts low income trans individ ..read more

Prisons operate in part, to strip people of their identities, with the intent to reduce people to identification based on solely a number. This dehumanizing tactic is even more harmful for transgender, gender non-conforming, non-binary and intersex (TGNCNBI) folks. According to a 2022 report by the Sentencing Project, TGNCNBI folks also experience higher rates of sexual harassment and/or violence, are more likely to be placed in solitary confinement and are less likely to have familial/friend support networks outside of the prison.
