There is a new art show up at the Community Center in downtown Smyrna, sponsored by the Smyrna Arts Council.  I have four recent paintings in this show. It’s a new show that will continue until the end of November, but I’m not sure exactly when it ends. Below are the paintings I have in this show and some of the other pieces by other artists. This is a small art show and the first one in the Community Center. I am working on new abstracts and portraits I hope to exhibit in an upcoming show  in 2024. New Website for Buying Shelly’s Art and Prints

There is a new website for buying Shelly’s art! It offers original, ready to hang artwork and the opportunity to get that artwork in the form of prints. The website is Fine Art by Shelly.  There is still going to be new art here, the site of her primary Gallery of art, Fine Art South, but the place to buy her art will be on the Fineartbyshelly.com website. This change was made primarily for two reasons:  Buyer security, and prints!  I have been looking for a way to sell prints on my website for literally years, and all options I came across were extremely expensive, or not what ..read more

Why Impressionism is So Important in Contemporary Art

Impressionism is my favorite art style (after abstraction) for so many reasons. This video helps to explain why it’s an important art movement, but it’s also important to know it’s still an important art movement and is enjoying a resurgence right now.     There is a big resistance to painting in a highly realistic style on the part of many artists. The reasons differ, but for me it’s because I strongly feel that artists should not try to emulate a camera. We are not cameras, we are artistic, expressive human beings with our voices to add to our art. You can’t add much of a voice to ..read more

Paint the Light, Skip the Details!
Fine Art South Blog

Possibly the hardest thing to do as a watercolor painter is to give up trying to paint all the details – every little thing that you see with your eyes. The best, most interesting watercolor paintings in my opinion are those that capture the light of a subject or landscape and leave the details behind. Some really great watercolors just shine with light and show high contrast between light and dark. This is the goal I am trying for in my newer watercolor paintings. This can be confusing to people who enter painting contests, especially watercolor contests, which often seem to reward artists wh ..read more

Earth Day Art

Once upon a time, I had an environmental art website. Since it was just recently Earth Day, I will revisit some of that art. Like many people, I’m very concerned about the environment and what people are doing to it. That has only increased with time. Most of my artwork now and in the future will remain dedicated to highlighting nature and how important our environment is to us and every living thing. Mystery and Imagination in Painting
Fine Art South Blog

Mystery and Imagination are important in my artwork and in the artwork of millions of artists. Many people think that painting from life requires you to follow exactly what you see in front of you, but there is no reason to do that. Artists with imagination (hopefully most of us) break all the rules and paint what we can dream and imagine, some of it based in reality, some of it not. My favorite artwork to look at is science-fiction based because of the enormous degree of imagination some artists have. This painting is one of mine. Futurism, a small acrylic painting of a possible future. Ext ..read more

AI-Created Art Is Art in Our Minds

Recently the online art news world was subjected to viewing the printed image below,  and many people concluded it’s not art. I completely disagree! This computer-generated art won a first place ribbon at the Colorado State Fair. More traditional artists were pissed off. I don’t understand why. I have seen art made of all kinds of things that aren’t traditional and no one complained. What is wrong with AI-generated art? In my opinion, art happens inside the brain. It often comes out differently than the artist intended, after the initial idea and the imagining of it. So the end result is ..read more

It’s Art Fair Season Again
Fine Art South Blog

It’s Art Fair season! It’s almost summer and with summer comes art fairs, craft festivals, music festivals with art, and everything in between. Are you someone who likes to buy art but are frustrated with the outdoor art festival scene? I understand, and I think I know why many people are frustrated. There has been a gradual “cheapening” of fine art at art festivals in the last 10 years, and there is less quality fine art to choose from. I saw this trend happening as I was an artist who participated in art fairs, mainly in two different states; one in the North and one in the South. I sold art ..read more
