Apologies in advance if I offend anyone.   When I look at low wing AC I wonder if you pilots of them worry about if you flipped it on its back say during a dead stick landing in a paddock for example. Do they have means of opening the canopy somehow.  And the other thing is does it get hot under them bubbles and do you get sunburn't.  ..read more

Training schools for pilots have warned they cannot afford the cost of shifting their operations to make way for Western Sydney International Airport in 2026, which could put further strain on the already depleted supply of pilots.   Aeria Management Group – which operates Camden and Bankstown airports and provides the bulk of pilot training in NSW – has warned the federal Department of Transport that its draft environmental impact statement for the new airport “substantially underestimates” the costs for the existing airports in the congested Sydney Basin.   Read story here ..read more

Well I did my second solo today and I just couldn't get my head in the game. I think it was a combination of not keeping hydrated. It was hot in the aircraft today.the other was fatigue.  I should have made the decision to stay on the ground but I learnt the hard way. Took  4 attempts to get on the ground.  A big bounce on one attempt. As soon as the instructor got out I just seemed to forget stuff.  The CFI talked me down on the last go , although I had already regained my composure and set up properly for the landing.  But knowing he was there made a huge difference ..read more

Hi My son is in SA and is wanting to learn to fly. It seems his two options (in the area where he lives - Cape Town) are a PPL or a Microlite licence/cert (don't know the exact name). Is there anyone with some experience with this?  Where can I (or he) find info regarding pilot licences in SA other than a full PPL.   Regards, Duncan ..read more

Parlous State of Spin Knowledge and Training

CASA's Part 61 MOS requires this as essential knowledge for all pilots: "Differentiate between a spin and a spiral dive in a light aeroplane and describe the standard recovery technique for each manoeuvre." Yet I regularly encounter pilots and students who do not know the "standard" recovery technique for a spin.   Worse, I regularly encounter flight instructors and trainee flight instructors who also do not know the correct recovery technique - either that "standard" one or, more importantly, the one described in the flight manual of the type they fly. They are required to have a spin fl ..read more
