In 2019, a promising new player entered Utah’s beer festival lineup. More than two dozen Utah craft breweries teamed up to co-brew one-of-a-kind creations at the inaugural Utah Brewers Guild Fest. The collaborative approach proved to be a welcome addition for craft beer lovers. And then it went on hiatus as in-person events became tricky to coordinate during heightened COVID times. But now, the festival is back. It’s operating under a slightly different name — Utah Brewers Guild Collab Fest — but the premise remains. Thirty-two Utah breweries are teaming up to offer 16 unique brews at the Sept ..read more

Perhaps nothing makes brewers beam more than when one of their beer babies—and a lager at that—becomes a commercial success. For Jeff Bunk, director of operations for Proper Brewing Co., that’s the story of Whispers of the Primordial Sea. He’d had his recipe for the smoked Helles with pineapple tucked away since his days working at a cidery in Oregon. Then, in late 2020, Proper put the beer on draft as a one-off. And in mid-2021 Whispers of the Primordial Sea hit the Utah market in 16-ounce cans. It became an instant hit. “The opportunity came up, OK, I have this beer, let’s try it,” Bunk reme ..read more

Shades Brewing, which continues to make noise with its critically acclaimed and immensely popular kveik beers, nabbed three medals for a trio of American Sour Ale variations. Each beer features the unique kveik yeast strain. Pina Colada earned silver in the Field Bee ..read more

Homebrewers who brew lagers are used to waiting. The styles often reward patience. But after three years between full-fledged Lagerpalooza events due to COVID-19 concerns, even the most patient of brewers and beer drinkers are ready to enjoy clean, crisp lagers among friends. This year, organizers are putting the palooza back in Lagerpalooza, says Kelly Schaefer, marketing director for Bohemian Brewery. The two-part event — a lager-specific homebrew competition and a craft beer festival — returns in full force for the first time since 2019 (the homebrew competition took place in 2020, and the ..read more
