I’ve been meaning to write this blog for probably about 15 years now. so, what’s kept me waiting?
Surgical thinking vs change management
A lot of reasons. I tend to jump to conclusions quickly. The beginning of my career as a surgeon was focused on obtaining relevant information in the fastest and most efficient manner to make a timely decision that could sometimes mean the difference in a patient’s survival. I’ve learned over my 22-year surgical career to take my time and get as much information as possible before coming to conclusions. This is a useful skill when outside the operating room o ..read more

As a surgeon with over two decades of experience, I’ve witnessed the healthcare landscape undergo significant changes, and 2023 has proven to be particularly challenging, especially for independent specialty surgical practices like ours at Boston Hernia.
At Boston Hernia, we specialize in abdominal core health. We have mastered two approaches to inguinal hernia repair that are better for patients and are not commonly performed. This has virtually eliminated chronic pain – a problem affecting 30,000 Americans who undergo inguinal hernia repair each year. Our pr ..read more

Boston Hernia Publishes Outcomes of Fast-Recovery Inguinal Hernia Surgery: Significant Improvement in Recovery Over Traditional Approaches
On August 8th, 2023, Boston Hernia was featured in a paper showing improved patient-reported outcomes after open preperitoneal inguinal hernia repair when compared to anterior Lichtenstein repair.
For four decades, the Lichtenstein repair has been the go-to option for “open” inguinal hernia repairs. However, international guidelines propose a shift towards posterior mesh placement, citing its biomechanical benefits and pot ..read more

The internet is a scary place! A lot of patients come to see us for their hernia after doing some internet research first. Patients are often terrified about their intestine being stuck in the hernia and their bowel “exploding” because of this. Like anything else, when people write about their experiences on the internet, we have to take their interpretation with a grain of salt. For the vast majority of patients with hernias, their risk is EXTRAORDINARILY low that they will end up with an emergency like those they have read about on the internet – and in ma ..read more

It’s no secret that access to healthcare in the U.S. is a problem, and sometimes just finding a doctor is a struggle for many Americans.
When you think about your healthcare and what you reasonably expect from your doctor, consider these questions:
When was the last time your doctor picked up the phone when you called?
How long does it take you to get in to see your doctor?
Do you feel rushed through your doctors’ visits?
Do your visits with your doctor feel transactional?
Does your doctor know you as a person?
If most of your responses are ..read more

For years, the surgical industry has tried to solve the problem of chronic pain and hernia recurrence in inguinal hernia surgery. First came mesh, with its promise of a “tension free” repair and therefore faster recovery and low recurrence. While surgical mesh is safe and effective and hernia recurrence rates did improve, a new problem of Chronic Postoperative Inguinal Pain (CPIP) emerged. Most recently, laparoscopy and robotics became the latest industry fad to promise reduced recurrence, faster recovery and eliminated CPIP. Unfortunately, despite a much more expensive technology and ..read more
