November 13th is World Kindness Day. In today’s world, kindness matters more than ever. The word “humane” as in Humane Society means being kind, compassionate and empathetic.  Our Humane Education department strives to instill these character traits through our youth programs every day of the year.  But during this day of kindness, we ask everyone to stop for a moment to consider the people and animals with whom we share the planet.  We are asking everyone young and old to do one additional act of kindness on this day, to help any person or animal.  Here are some ideas for ..read more

A Bunny for Easter? Not So Fast.

by Dr. Rachael Krieger

As springtime approaches, many people consider bringing home a pet rabbit, especially as a gift for an eager child.  In anticipation, many pet stores will be seeking out baby bunnies to re-sell from breeding farms, which can have similar conditions to puppy mills.  Bunnies make amazing pets, however they require more work and dedication than many people realize, so the decision needs to be considered carefully.   When adopting a rabbit, the expectation is often that they will be similar to other ‘first pets’ for children such as hamsters and fish- aka they will be low maintenan ..read more

Diamond in the Ruff: Nala

8-year-old Nala is a cuddly and affectionate female cat that is vocal for food and loves getting treats. She is super friendly with people and likes laps and being pet. She was surrendered to the shelter because she did not adjust well to a new cat that was added to her home. She did not like having to share a litter box, so she stopped using it. Nala likes to play and enjoys lasers and string toys. She is good with children and even polite dogs, but we would recommend a home that does not have other cats. She will need a patient adopter that will allow her to adjust to new surroundings. Can ..read more

Newman is 10-years-old and is just the sweetest, most gentle guy, who doesn’t deserve to be spending his golden years in a shelter. Newman was transferred to our shelter, so we don’t know his story, but he has clearly been through a lot and has evidence of an embedded collar around his neck. He is showing signs of arthritis and could really use a comfy orthopedic bed in a loving home! Can you help make this older gentleman’s golden years the best years possible? Newman’s friends at JR Dunn Jewelers have kindly sponsored his adoption fee. If he sounds like he might be a good fit for you, pleas ..read more

Six-year-old Teddy has had a rough go. He was brought into our shelter as a puppy and then adopted 5 years ago. Now he is back at our shelter and doesn’t know what is happening. Teddy is a sweet dog that is good with dogs, cats and children over 3 years. He is housebroken and loves people, but sadly he has extreme separation anxiety, which is why he was surrendered to us. Teddy is a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon mix, which is a breed that is very friendly and affectionate but likes to have a job and be with their people. He needs a family that will understand his anxiety and help him succeed in ..read more

Xena is a happy and social 43lb girl that does well with other dogs with a similar temperament. She has a lot of energy and is a bit of an escape artist, so please make sure you have a secure fence at home! Xena would really love to have a forever family that will give her all the love and attention she could ask for! Xena’s friends at J.R. Dunn Jewelers have kindly sponsored her adoption fee. Looking for a sweet treat just in time for Valentine’s Day? Well, meet Hershey! 3-year-old Hershey is a very happy, very energetic dog. He was sadly given up because someone in his family was allergic. He loves to cuddle, but also likes to jump up and give kisses. We are working on his basic commands, and he is learning how to sit nicely. He is good with other high-energy dogs and best with older kids. Can you make this happy fellow’s Valentine dream come true? Hershey’s friends at J.R. Dunn Jewelers have kindly sponsored his adoption fee. If Hershey (536176101) sounds like he might be a good ..read more
