Minimizing sanding after ceiling sheetrock patches

Doing some ceiling sheetrock patches and need to sand the premix joint compound. I know the best way is to do an exceptional coating job that needs little sanding. I hate ceiling sanding it's just so much dust raining down making a mess everywhere. I tried wet sanding that helps some. I wonder, once I put the premixed mud on, will it help if I lightly once over the mud with a wet sponge ..read more

Finish Shower Surround near corner

What's the best way to do the corner bead for the shower surround in the attached picture? I was initially going to use the Trim-Tex shower bead, but it's about 2 1/4" wide, so it's too wide for the corner. If I put the corner bead on there, both will overlap. I can't add a 2x4 to make it wider because the door is there (in fact, the door molding is only about half an inch wide, too, since the space is so tiny). I could build it up with Durabond, but I wanted to use the Trim-Tex shower... Finish Shower Surround near corner ..read more

Mystery water stains on drywall after rework

I've had the bottom 2 feet of drywall replaced about a week ago. It was highly saturated with water due to my foundation being saturated after rain. To my surprise, faint water stains have appeared in the same area after more rain. Not sure if this is possible a roof leak, but based on my research it might also possibly be water staining from condensation. I put some exploratory holes in the wall and noticed that it looks like the drywallers left gaps in the insulation. Could the... Mystery water stains on drywall after rework ..read more

Here's my current situation. Is there any way to correct this uneven ceiling without shimming and installing new drywall throughout the entire bathroom? Plan is to install 24x48 wall tiles on this wall. I could leave it as is and keep the tile 6" from the ceiling however, I don't want to drop the shower head outlet down. Would cutting the tiles on top at an angle to match the celling a good option ..read more

How do you dispose of plaster water that's used to clean up the tools? The bottom is goopy with plaster so I don't want to just dump it in the kitchen drain, and it's too watery to throw in the trash ..read more

I am about to tear out the bathroom walls, floor and ceiling and rebuild from scratch (for reasons I won't go into). I absolutely cannot stand tile, but I understand that you cannot just use standard drywall for bathrooms. What are my options, other than tile? Is "solid rock" the only type of wall acceptable behind the shower, even with a plastic tub surround? Pretty sure that no type of gypsum board (even mold-proof) would be acceptable, at least not without some kind of special coating... No-Tile Bathroom ..read more

Can an inside taped corner and outside corner bead overlap?

Maybe this is a simple one and I just can't seem to find the answer on google. I have a small bump out that was unavoidable due to pushing out the tub/shower past a window, so the inside and outside corner bead will overlap. Is this OK? If so, should I do them both at the same time? Or just do the inside first, let dry. Coat and set the outside bead? I have been using fibafuse for the inside corners so far. And for the outside corner I will either use tile tape, or a plastic bead... Can an inside taped corner and outside corner bead overlap ..read more

How to repair plaster ceiling

How do I go about repairing this plaster ceiling? Probably a dumb question but do I just use mud, plaster of Paris, etc? I’ve never actually done plaster before, only spackling / patching drywall. I’m pretty sure it’s plaster applied over Sheetrock. I believe it’s skip trowel texture. There’s a few inches like this which will crumble off easily if i touch it, before it goes back to normal after a few inches. We’ve had repeated leaks into this ceiling from a horrible chimney and I’m finally... How to repair plaster ceiling ..read more
