Hoping someone here can fill some knowledge gaps for me. I picked up a sweet little fly rod at an estate sale today. I was able to find some info on line, but still had a few questions... It's a four piece 9', 5 wt, D & E rod from Battleground, Washington. Came with the original sock. I know that D & E was operated by Vern Dollar (obit says he passed in 2016) and went out of business around 2004. See post #10 for update. My grandson who is five called me a couple weeks ago and asked if I would build him a blue fishing rod. What’s a grandpa to say? Sure no problem as I had five days to get it done as he was was coming out from Georgia to spend a week here in town. Yesterday I was out doing some bass fishing down on the big C. I found a leader that had been part of a plunking rig and it had two (8mm?) chartreuse beads on the line just sitting above the kwikfish. The leader went up to a snap swivel and a 3/4 oz lead ball. Hooks were nice and sharp too! But yeah I was wondering if that's something I was missing out on or what? Ever heard of that? Thought to give them a try and ordered 3. 1 surf blank and 2 protroll composite blanks. Pleasantly surprised, Nate walks his talk. They do not sell factory seconds, every top straight first time. So I purchased a new reel for my rod since I haven’t been fishing in a long time 10+ years and my old reel has some corrosion. I purchased a Shimano Miravel C3000HG the other day at BCF took it out of the box this afternoon to put some line on it for this weekend and I was looking at the reel and noticed that the reel has a lot wobble on the spool no idea why I don’t think this is normal to have this much wobble even if you tighten up the drag it still does it and then would probably be too... is this normal to have slack/wobble in a brand new reel out of the box ..read more
