The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) has unveiled a formidable team of 15 athletes who will represent Team South Africa at the upcoming Para Athletics World Championships in Kobe, Japan, from May 17th to 25th. Teen sensation Pieter Coetzé wrapped up the SA Swimming Championships in Gqeberha with his fifth gold medal of the meet on Saturday. The 19-year-old once again outgunned one of his childhood role models, Roland Schoeman, to take the 50m freestyle title in 22.45 seconds. Erin Gallagher powered to her second national record of the week on the penultimate night of action at the SA Swimming Championships in Gqeberha on Friday. The Pretoria swimmer stormed to the national title in the 100m butterfly in a time of 57.32 seconds, also dipping under the Olympic qualifying time of 57.92. Pieter Coetzé added a fourth gold medal to his growing haulat the SA National Swimming Championships in Gqeberha on Thursday while also registering two Olympic qualifying times in the 100m backstroke. The 19-year-old swam 53.05 seconds in the morning heats to dip under the required 53.74 seconds to reach the Olympic Games and went even quicker in the evening final, finishing in 52.89 seconds to take the title. The President of SASCOC, Mr Barry Hendricks, has, on behalf of the organisation, expressed his condolences to the family of the late Mr Jerry Masia, former president of the South African Gymnastics Federation (SAGF). Team SA completed their African Games campaign when they added seven more medals on Friday to take their final tally to 106. That left them in third position behind Egypt and Nigeria headed into Saturday’s last day, although Team SA don’t have any representatives. They had gone into Friday’s competition with 99 medals, and Rogain Joseph brought up the 100th in style when she raced to the gold medal in the women’s 400m hurdles in a personal best time of 55.39 seconds. Friday is Team SA’s final day of competition at the 13th African Games in Accra, where the curtain will officially come down at the closing ceremony on Saturday evening.
