Junk drawer Headphone Amp - 12v tubes & Germanium

We all have a junk drawer and if you build electronics it could have some interesting leftovers. Mine has some space charge vacuum tubes, germanium transistors and other bits. I'm also in need of a headphone amp to drive 32 ohm cans, so the goal here is to spend close to zero and make something that sounds good. I'd like to start by acknowledging Pete Millet's 12AE6A space charge vacuum tube headphone amp design as the inspiration for this project. However, I did redesign the cathode... Read more ..read more

4Vrms XLR level and TPA6120 max differential input voltage rating

I'm designing a DAC + HPA based on TPA6120 with the XLR output level of 4Vrms and PSU voltages of +/-15V. I'd like to use TPA6120 in a differential configuration (see attached TPA6120 circuit) taking an input differential signal directly from the XLR output after a XLR LPF (see attached XLR circuit). I noticed that the absolute maximum differential input voltage rating for TPA6120 is 6V (see attached TPA6120 Absolute Maximum Ratings table). I assume it's 6Vpp, not 6Vrms. Questions: 1. When... Headphones driver: OPA1622 vs OPA1688

I'm planning to build this minimal circuit. The source is an I-out DAC. One opamp creates a virtual ground–strong enough for 32ohm HPs to sit on, the other a DAC filter+driver for the headphones. The main candidate has been the OPA1622 so far, for its large output current. Then I discovered the OPA1688, weaker but maybe enough for me and easy to solder. Also good with capacitive loads. Simulating both I found something puzzling... Crucial here is that DC offset is extremely low I guess... Read more ..read more

Which is the DSL line driver IC, what is not TPA6120 and actually better than that?

Hello, I was listening to a headphone amp today, which was quite good. The maker says it is an IC amplifier, DSL differential line driver like TPA6120, but not the TPA6120, something better. I was told the output impedance is very low too. I could not compare it to any other amp, but I know it was good to listen to. Regards, JG ..read more

Open Source DHT Estat Headphone Amp -- OSDEHA

Oups. I fell into the rabbit hole of electrostatic headphones. Those estats sound really nice to my ears! Estats work at high voltage and low currents, so they can (and should!) work directly off the anode(s) of some nice vacuum tube(s). No transformers getting in the way! There are a few estat tube amps out there. However, I could not find one that fits my needs (or wishes). The amp should be somewhat compact, and I want an output stage using directly heated triodes (DHTs). So I started... Read more ..read more

Adding VU meters to an Aikido OTL headphone amp.

I'm in the process of building an Aikido OTL headphone amp and thinking of add a pair of VU meters, just for the look. The driver board I intend to use is this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1668490787...HbusGwtRI-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY My question is whether I should connect the meters to the RCA input (fed from a 2Vrms output DAC) or headphone output? And of course, most common question... Read more ..read more

TPA6120 Kit Mod Composite

Hi fellow experimenters. This simple project unexpectedly turned into an educational experience for me, so why don't I share some of it. I bought this amp as a kit from Ebay (the build photo below) as it looked inviting to be rewired into a composite which I wanted to make one day. Very good examples can be found here on DIYA and elsewhere. Design of the kit however included questionable approaches and was lacking such critical things as rail decoupling for opamps and the TPA6120. Those... Read more ..read more

Making best use of a 14.8V battery supply for Headphone Amp
DIY Audio Forum » Headphone Systems

I'm a relative novice building a TPA6120A2-based headphone amp for fun and for personal use. Suppose I have a 4S Lithium Ion battery pack, giving a nominal 14.8V, though varying between 16.8V and 12V dependent on state of charge. Which of the following power supply approaches would you favour: (a) Simple resistor-based rail-splitter to give an unregulated +/- 7.2V (approx) to the opamp. (b) Simple rail-splitter followed by low drop-out regulators to +/-5V. (c) Use an isolated DC-DC... Read more ..read more
