Crumb Rubber Pavement Introduction Production of a crumb rubber pavement comprises a series of activities, such as materials production, construction, maintenance etc., all of which have environmental impacts. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) can track and quantify the environmental impacts of both individual and total activities of products. It helps identify the activities with the highest environmental burdens within the life cycle of the product, or point to 2 hotspots and clarify the most environmentally effective strategies among various options. Such advantages make LCA a methodology frequen ..read more

Rubberized Asphalt Mix Design In work with Illinois Tollway contractors, Asphalt Plus participated in early balanced asphalt mix design efforts in Tollway main line SMA mix designs. Dry process rubber using ElastikoR ECR was used in SMA and dense-graded applications on I-355, I-88 and I-294, which include pavements with more than 30 Million ESAL traffic volumes. These pavements were placed in 2015 and 2016. These were not just standard mix designs including ground tire rubber. Asphalt mix design development at STATE Testing and MAPIL included design objectives that were and are unique. Traf ..read more

What is Rubber Asphalt? Rubber asphalt is not new but just starting to resurface throughout the US. It is produced from grinding up whole scrap tires from automobiles. Then the use of the ground tiers is mixed with the asphalt and then laid. Being the largest market for ground tiers, rubberized asphalt consumes an estimated 220,000,000 pounds or around 12 million tires annually. More and more states are starting to see the benefits of rubber and recently have been taking on the old technology and mastering the process. In 2015, the Illinois Tollway Authority commissioned a demonstration projec ..read more

In 2022, officials from the Missouri Department of Transportation allowed the replacement of their standard SMA mix design for interstate highway roads with a mix modified with Engineered Crumb Rubber (ECR).  This rubberized mix used ElastikoR ECR as a mix modifier.  When the substitution was allowed, the road agency replaced an SMA mix utilizing Poly-Phosphoric Acid (PPA) as a binder stiffener along with fibers.  The replacement mix used ECR and no fibers.  With the new rubberized mix design, two questions were raised:  will the rubber hold the liquid asphalt binder ..read more
