Miami is vibrant. Miami is International. Miami is a destination for people and for media production too. On February 28, I was in the Brickell area of Miami for a meeting. Outside, Brickell Avenue was abuzz with the filming of Bad Boys 4, starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Camera Crew in the fountain (left Center) The first “Bad Boys” movie came out in 1995 and was a smash hit. The upcoming sequel is scheduled for release on June 14. Having been in NYC for many years, I was impressed how the Miami Police Department handled the filming. What was billed as a potential traffic nightmare ..read more

Eliminating Property Tax in Florida?
Hal Feldman Blog

It is early, but there is a proposal that was heard this week in a House committee that would start the ball rolling toward eliminating property taxes in Florida. “This bill (HB 1371) is about one thing. It's about starting down the road toward phasing out and eliminating Florida's property tax," said Rep. Ryan Chamberlin, R-Ocala. Florida already has no state income tax. If property taxes go away, that money must be made up somehow. Rep. Joe Casello, D-Boynton Beach, noted that likely means a significant increase in sales taxes. “So, by eliminating the property tax which all municipalities c ..read more

Jerry for Pinecrest: Candidate for Council

Most people wake up, go to work and come home day-after-day, not giving much thought to the town they live in. Not so for Jerry Greenberg. He’s lived in the Pinecrest area his whole life and has somehow always known in his bones that he was meant to serve his community. “My Dad worked as the Miami-Dade County Attorney almost his whole career and he brought that home with him,” explains Greenberg. “It inspired me to want to work in government too.” Now seems to be that time. “It's already wonderful in Pinecrest! Besides the trees, weather, houses and the people, it is the well-functioning Coun ..read more

Arcade Time Entertainment: Rebooting the Arcade

Most of you will recall the early days of the video arcade. Pac-Man, Space Invaders, Asteroids, Centipede and a myriad of pinball machines come to mind. It was a joyful part of our childhood where we would pump quarters into machines and compete against people in line right behind us for the honors of adding our initials to the machine’s high score list. The home entertainment systems came next. Atari, Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox brought that electronic fun into our home, but we lost a sense of community in the process. No longer were you king of the whole arcade, you were just king of the ..read more

Although comparably new, South Florida really does have rich history. Some of it is right under our noses and the Deering Estate in Palmetto Bay is just waiting for you to discover it with open arms. This gem 444-acre property at water’s edge just north of SW 168th Street is celebrated and protected. After 43 years, one of our beloved landmarks has closed. Wagons West was Suniland Shopping Center’s anchor since 1981, drawing in hungry shoppers and travelers to a true family-operated restaurant, complete with some unique and enduring personalities. Beyond the home-cooked American diner style food, it was really the people who both worked at and frequented Wagons West that made it so special. So many people have so many memories inside this place that Walter (Wally) Meunch built with his brother, literally by hand. 2019 Wagons West staff with Joyce Langley, loyal customer Once called the ..read more

50 Years of Smooth Shifting at Alonso Transmission

Regular car maintenance is important. Sure, most people know to change oil every 3000 miles (or longer if you use synthetic). But many of us never think about our transmissions. Since most manufacturers recommend changing transmission fluid every 30,000 to 60,000 miles for manual transmissions and 60,000 to 100,000 miles for automatic transmissions, it takes years to be needed and can easily slip the mind. I recently felt some acceleration issues with my car and checked with my regular auto shop. Surprisingly, they recommended Alonso Transmission over their own work. I was intrigued. Alonso ..read more
