Solidwool was born from the idea to create something beautiful - and to create a sustainable design with an unbreakable link to nature and our surroundings. We want to create a natural material that is beautiful with a story that connects people to the land it has come from.

We have seen Solidwool used in some interesting projects over the years, from knife handles to sunglasses frames, but we were taken aback to see Solidwool take form as a guitar through the creative mind and skilful hands of Richard Waddell of Uberfrank guitars. Richard singlehandedly builds unique, heirloom quality instrument in Somerset, UK, favouring sustainable materials where possible.
We caught up with Richard to deep dive into the project, and find out more about the process of making the Solidwool Spellbinder.
What is your background and how did you first get into making guitars?

Solidwool tells a fascinating story of sustainability and craftsmanship, each timeless piece is designed to be used, cherished and passed down, much like we do with our most loved Christmas decorations. It is this sense of ‘treasuring’ that we think holds the key to sustainable design. Treasuring the moments, people and things you hold dear, always seems poignant during the festive season - we hope we can capture some of that spirit in Solidwool.
Decorating your gathering spaces takes on a new importance during the festive season, as we invite our friends and loved ones to celebrate with us ..read more

At Solidwool we are always looking for exciting new ways to work with our incredible material, but not everything we do needs to be ‘new’ or follow trends. Instead we dedicate our time to creating enduring and functional design that captures our environment and passion for hardy British wool.
We experimented in colour quite a few years ago now, but stepped away from it to concentrate on perfecting and advancing the Herdwick Hembury chair. With our efforts rewarded, we have found the space to revisit colour in Solidwool, developing an organic and natural palette blending ..read more

This year we have seen Solidwool go from strength to strength, and with the current Hembury, we have a chair that celebrates the beauty of the iconic Herdwick sheep. The dedication and importance of using unwanted wool in our composite led us to look at other breeds that, like the Herdwick, we could use and turn their fleece into a beautiful new addition to Solidwool.
This meant that once again we began to experiment, to find a fleece that would, and could work in Solidwool. After many discussions and research we came across the wool from the Welsh Mountain sheep. One of the oldest br ..read more

Last year we were approached by Fujitsu to make 14 Hembury chairs for their new, sustainable Headquarters in The Lantern near Euston Station.
The Lantern, which opened its doors at the beginning of September 2022, is a new ‘smart building that champions sustainability and human efficiency’. So it is no surprise that we are thrilled to see our Hembury chair find a home in this intelligently designed space.
Housing offices, retail and residential accommodation, The Lantern creates a hub of wellbeing using natural materials with a built in sustainable structure - so we couldn't think o ..read more

We are arriving at the time of year where our kitchen and dining room table become the most important piece of furniture in our home. Around the table is where our festive celebrations take place, and be it a small gathering or big table full of friends, there is always joy involved and we can’t wait to decorate it.
With every table comes a chair, and the Hembury chair not only offers a stylish design but all the inspiration we could need for the season's festivities. Christmas is a time when textures, patterns and natural materials can be used in entirely different and creative ways, and it ..read more

You may have seen some of our new photography in recent months, earlier this year we visited the Lake District, (home of the Herdwick sheep) to shoot our new Hembury chair in the environment from which our wool comes.
In late Spring we spent a fascinating, and slightly muddy few days in the Western Lakes near Thirlmere, on a farm where a young shepherd works the land safeguarding a 500 strong flock of Herdwick sheep.
We were able to see the Herdwick in their environment, and find out how this rugged terrain has been shaped by this breed for centuries. There is so much beauty in the la ..read more
