Ways of hermetically sealing glass-glass (or maybe glass-aluminium)?

Having done quite a lot of research on the topic, the Grumble comes up quite a bit in results, and thought I'd reached the point where I'm better off asking about this rather niche query: I do wet plate collodion photography, and something that myself and a lot of other practitioners don't love about the process is the necessity of varnishing the plates to ensure archivability. As an experiment I've left a tintype unvarnished and it took 12-18 months or so to start showing tarnish, which I... Read more ..read more

Open frame for bead work
The Picture Framers Grumble

I am not a framer, I just want to make that confession right off the bat. So I'm going to need suggestions. I have a project I need to frame. It is a loom woven bead tapestry, this means it has all of the warp threads still attached at top and bottom. The warp threads are power pro fishing line, so some tough stuff- hard to cut. This needs to have an open back frame to have light pass through the piece. The beadwork needs to be sewn to some kind of fabric to set the frame on. I intent to... Read more ..read more

Moisture/Mold Accumulating Behind Hanging Frames
The Picture Framers Grumble

Customers bring in framed pieces from time to time that look like this: - due to condensation caused by the interior temperature being cool with a relatively high humidity level and the exterior temperature being warm - the hanging picture restricts air movement which causes the space behind the picture to remain moist - excellent breeding ground for mold/mildew - pretty common down here in the South on structures with solid masonry or poor insulation - doesn’t... Squaring up a brand new FT 2200
The Picture Framers Grumble

Hi there! Probably a beginners question here but here goes! I’ve been using an old FT 2100 but it was on its last legs so bought a new 2200. Hubby has put it together for me (techie teacher so great at squaring up etc!) However it just won’t square true - always cutting 1-2mm out. (This is the right hand side I’m referring to). If I cut a mat, say, 20cm x 20cm, it measures 19.8 x 19.9 x 20 x 19.8!! I think there’s movement at the very end of the cut. The clamp is slightly raised even when... Read more ..read more

Reccd adhesives for mounting photo print directly on substrate ?

Any print-to-backing adhesive recommendations ? Background: I do my own photo printing, framing and mounting. I prefer a floating frame w/o glass. Here's a link to one such finished print https://photos.app.goo.gl/Rw1CYKu2ZXjT7T2B7 New item by Jack Dausman I have been using spray adhesives, but I'm not 100% happy with the final look. So, after a few deep dives on the subject, I'm going to start using a PVA adhesive, laid onto the substrate with a foam roller (usually Gatorboard, but... Read more ..read more
