Need DevRel?
Let's build it together—the way it should be, where founders and DevRel work together to create the perfect environment and ecosystem for grand developer impact. Twilio did this, and look at them now.
I'd like to support a scrappy, kind founder looking to add DevRel, willing to let me build in public as we create the perfect environment for a developer program to thrive. Together, we would establish the vision & strategy of the program; I'd kick off the first few DevRel efforts, and eventually, we'd bring in the best candidate to do the job moving forward. I will also coach t ..read more

I’ve been living in the Waco area for just over a year now. I was born and raised in Minnesota and our family was sick of living in the tundra. We visited Waco in December of 2020 and fell in love with the kindness and southern hospitality we experienced. Since visiting, Waco has blown up (even more) and the market continues to grow. As a now-local, I’ve learned a lot about Waco in the last year, and since many of my tech industry friends find themselves “coming through here” I figured why not share the spots I love to visit.

You read that right. DevRel is sales.
Before you jump to conclusions, let me explain myself. Have you ever given a conference presentation or demo, had a developer ask you questions afterward, and later that same developer became a customer?
Who influenced that sale? ?
Are we traditional sales? Absolutely not. However, DevRel's efforts and relations do contribute to the company's total revenue. I know the true skeptics are ready to fight me in the comments, but DevRel teams are influential to a company's revenue. The whole premise of developer relations is to leverage developer peers to enga ..read more

One important tactic of managing community is to engage and respond to your community members in a valuable manner. When replying to community posts in communities I manage, I leverage the following guidelines:
Respond within 24 hours
Be kind
Put yourself in their shoes
Add some type of value, especially before you ask anything of them
Response Recommendations Address the person by name
Hello, _______, …..
Introduce them to fellow community members that can provide value
Helping them build their network is a huge value add that will build trust with them

Developer Relations aka DevRel is an ever-changing landscape as the industry becomes more widely known and evolves. The tech industry, in general, is seeing a shift in hiring prioritization and an increasing number of layoffs most recently. I’ve watched many of my DevRel peers find themselves laid off looking for other opportunities unexpectedly.
With that being said, I still believe our industry will continue growing at exponential rates as more founders & leaders begin to see the impact DevRel can have when companies target developers as one of their primary audiences. If you’re finding ..read more

I've found that most Developer Relations professionals struggle with defining strategy & measuring success. I myself have been through many strategy format revisions before landing on the best for my teams.
We don't have a magic user manual for DevRel or even all that many industry resources, even though we're all great at building resources for developers. Therefore, I wanted to share how I think about DevRel strategy and how other professionals are thinking about it as referenced in Developer Relations: How to Build and Grow a Successful Developer Program.
My strategy outline usually ha ..read more
