It’s the Twenties again – the 2020s, that is – and, just like one hundred years ago when flappers and sheiks partied during Prohibition, speakeasy bars are all the rage. There may be no legal restriction on adults consuming alcohol these days, but that doesn’t mean it’s not fun to pretend you are doing something illicit. In a a city rampant with trendy bars featuring every sort of gimmick, from fancy craft cocktails curated by “mixologists” to accompanying haute cuisine app menus, to insane concoctions featuring molecular gastronomic techniques and boba pearls. It’s all getting a little nuts ..read more

It’s St. Patrick’s Day, but today will look very different from celebrations past. While Guinness would normally flow freely and revelers would cheer on a lavish parade in a sea of green, this year there will be very few, or no parties. The bars are closed, and our newfound mandate of “social distancing” discourages congregating in groups of ten or more. Grocery stores have been ransacked, so good luck gathering all the right ingredients for a traditional corned beef and hash dinner. In short, welcome to the new normal.
The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, is sweeping the world, leaving panic a ..read more

It’s a sort of March Madness all right… but not in the ways you might expect. For one, there’s no basketball – or baseball, hockey, XFL, or any other professional sports. People are raiding grocery stores and fiending not for drugs, but for Lysol wipes and toilet paper. We’re experiencing the phenomenon of “social distancing,” or staying the hell away from other people. Flights around the world are cancelled. Folks are walking the streets in medical masks. It feels like the end of the world. #ThanksCoronavirus

A whimsical wire sculpture of Danny DeVito’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia character, art collector Ongo Gablogian, was recently found dangling from the telephone cables at Broad Street and Washington Avenue. At first, onlookers thought the rotund little man was a caricature of ol’ Benny Franklin, as it sported a broad, angular hairstyle and big glasses. Instead, street artist Reed BMore confessed on Instagram that his latest creation was inspired by his favorite scene of his favorite show, the cynical and outrageous comedy set in a Philadelphia pub.
Ongo wasn’t Reed’s first contribution t ..read more

Ladies and gents: do you swoon at the sight of a bushy beard? Do lumberjack types make you weak in the knees? Join the crowd.
Razor and trimmer manufacturer Wahl named Philadelphia America’s most beard-friendly city in 2018, and it’s true that the City of Brotherly Love loves the follicly-blessed. Our own governor, Tom Wolf, sports a well-coiffed beard, and so do some of the best-loved figures in the city. Look at Gritty – his luscious ginger facial hair is an inimitable facet of his charm.
Is it any surprise that Philadelphia is ground zero for well-bearded specimens? They showed out last Sat ..read more
