Formula 1 is widely seen as the pinnacle of motorsport, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they have the very best racing drivers in the world. The rise of Formula E and the incredible skills of the top rally drivers in the World Rally Championship mean the debate about which motorsport series has the best drivers is not simple. Of course, comparing different championships is difficult because F1, Formula E and WRC require completely different skill sets. But, the principles of driving a car as quick as possible is the same, so which series has the best drivers? Formula E Jaguar Gen2 car and Re ..read more

The 2022 World Rally Championship wasn’t particularly memorable in terms of action but what we did see was the emergence of Kalle Rovanpera and perhaps the start of a new era. Rovanpera is without doubt one of the most talented drivers in the whole of motorsport right now due to his sheer speed and the way he thinks which is perfectly suited to the WRC. He smashed Colin McRae‘s record to become the youngest champion by five years, one day after his 22nd birthday. This is a series where you are meant to take years to develop and hone your skills before even thinking about being a title contende ..read more

Ken Block, even if you are not an off-road motorsport fan, you almost certainly would have heard of his name. That alone tells you how special he was. A pioneer, an icon, flamboyant every time he got behind the wheel of a racing car. He made rallying and rallycross really cool. It was a massive shock to read that Block died on Tuesday after a snowmobile accident in Utah. He went out doing what he loved, unfortunately far too early and he will be sorely missed by the motorsport community. Why? The 55-year-old had a charisma and wanted to put on a show every time he was at an event. In the years ..read more

Utter dominance is something the World Rally Championship is used to after two decades of success for Sebastien Loeb and Sebastien Ogier, both raising the bar of what it takes to be a top rally driver to unprecedented levels. When Loeb retired from WRC full-time in 2012, Ogier was there to take the mantle. Ogier retired last year, and a certain Kalle Rovanpera has been making huge marks on the WRC in 2022. It’s frightening how good Rovanpera is, delivering on all the hype that was made about him during his teenage years. He leads the WRC driver standings by a whopping 65 points following his l ..read more

Kris Meeke: WRC introduced hybrid technology too late

Former World Rally Championship driver Kris Meeke believes the WRC implemented hybrid technology too late and thinks the series will have to change to remain viable. WRC introduced an all-new Rally1 hybrid machine this year which is powered by 100 percent sustainable fuel. Formula 1 were the first major motorsport series to use hybrid technology in 2014, the same year Formula E began, so WRC may have fallen behind in the race to remain road car relevant. “It’s a lot easier looking back on WRC as a neutral when you’re involved in it,” Meeke exclusively told Total-Motorsport.com. “As a driver, t ..read more
