Highest UPM fonts you’ve built? Shipped/sold?

I’ve read a few threads over the years about unusually high UPM fonts and the challenges they create. The usual argument I remember in favor of high UPM is extremely thin lines for thin weights, high optical sizes or thin filigree ornament. (»Zier«.) And I understand 1000 is typical for cubic curve fonts and 2048 for quadratic. And I seem to recall 10,000 UPM was the working resolution for IK source files, but those are not final shipping fonts. My question is what is the highest UPM font you’ve built, shipped and sold? And what limits or problems did it have, if any, in which particular appli ..read more

I have Guajrati fonts (Unicode), and exported both as TTF and OTF, but not all the features work on both platform.  On Word, the font shows up, but can't type in that font, it would revert the font to deafult font ..read more

A fun article about F.C. Variable

Here's an interesting article from It'sNiceThat about the crossroads of variable fonts and interactive illustrations. You can play around with the font yourself on Rob & Robin’s website! It's marvelous seeing how VF technology is flexible enough to be applied in unique ways—such as Input Cipher from DJR or Kablammo from Vectro Type Foundry. I wonder where variable technology will be in ten years? Anyways, just wanted to share ..read more

Calluna Sans as an alternative to Scala Sans, but...

Designing a book based on the layout used in one of Taschen's architectural series which featured Scala Sans for body text. Recreated the layout initially using Scala Sans which I'm enamored here - it seems to be the perfect "voice" for the author and subject matter. Of course Taschen's designers created a perfectly proportioned look amongst all the elements, worthy of study and emulation, but what I have is obviously too derivative, and I've begun customizing, starting with a similar font.  Calluna Sans seemed to fit the bill, after ..read more

Non-linear or higher-order interpolation (HOI)

Hello there, Following a discussion in this thread, I thought it would make sense to create a new thread on the topic of non-linear interpolation. The principle is explained very nicely (I think) by Underware here. I'm personally interested in this, because I'm trying to create an animated version of a typeface I'm working on. Of course one could simply animate it in animation software, but HOI in a variable font would be a much more elegant and flexible solution. Obviously this is just one example use for HOI, the possibilities are endless. So, is there any chance we will see HOI become p ..read more

Variation Selectors for Ligatures?
TypeDrawers » Font Technology
by Daniel Yacob

Greetings All, Ligatures are found in Ge'ez (Ethiopic) manuscripts but not consistently, whereby within a paragraph the ligature may appear on one line, but not the next.  The ግዚ ligature is by far the best-known and most frequently found example.  This is different from Latin script where a ligature substitution is desirable 100% of the time. In the Ge'ez case, the user would want to have selective control over the substitution. Since the CMAP subtable 14 spec supports only a single "base" character in the mapping, I thought to use a liga feature, but add a variation selector as a ..read more
