We arrive at Gabarone airport, where our fully equipped 4X4 camper vehicles await us. Each booking gets their own vehicle, complete with roof-top tent, fridge freezer, cutlery, crockery, camp furniture, recovery gear, freshly laundered linen, and pretty much everything else required for self-sufficient independent travel through the remote wilderness areas of Southern Africa. We head directly into town to stock up with provisions, have a look around and generally acclimatising ourselves to being in Africa. But everyone is keen to get out of the city and into the bush, so before long we’re off ..read more

In the autumn of 2009, I became the first UK based 4X4 tour operator to explore Western Sahara, penetrating the shimmering expanses of the Sahara Occidental, accompanied by a handful of like-minded adventurers. Hardy souls, each and every one of them, enticed by the prospect of being the first to recce this unforgiving and potentially hostile desert environment. So we stifled our trepidation and embraced with anticipation, the opportunity to venture forth and be the first UK group to do so. This is the story of our experiences, all those years ago... The Pyrenees remain an ever popular destination for the adventurous 4X4 explorer, and for a plethora of good reasons too. Beautiful rugged terrain, breath-taking scenery, plentiful flora and fauna, outstanding campsites and of course, the enticing tales of smugglers and smugglers’ tracks, many of which feature on most 4X4 tour operators’ itineraries. Indeed, some of these smugglers’ tracks are still in use, albeit surreptitiously, by the vagabonds running duty-free alcohol and tobacco from the nearby mountainous tax haven of Andorra. And through this paradise of mountains and rivers in Catalo ..read more

Leaving the early morning ferry and clearing customs at the modern new port of Tangier Med, we head due south through the interior of the country, which provides an excellent introduction to this diverse country, allowing us to witness the daily existences of ordinary Moroccans, carrying on about their businesses, unaffected by mass tourism in these regions. Meandering through the beautiful Rif Mountains, blanketed by vast expanses of fragrant Pine trees, we make our way to Azrou, located on the northern edge of the enchanting Cedar Forests – home to raucous troops of North Africa’s primate ..read more

We meet at a charming campsite located on the banks of the River Arc in Lanslebourg, for a welcoming burger BBQ, and introductory briefing to the 10 day tour which lies ahead of us... Day 1: We depart the campsite following breakfast and within a few minutes we leave the tarmac onto an uphill mountain track through Pine forests. We pull over and deflate our tyres (20psi front and 25psi rear) to ensure maximum traction, puncture resistance and improved handling on the bumpy tracks. Following an exciting traversal of the mountains, we descend towards the turquoise Lac du Mont Cenis, where we st ..read more
