It wasn’t that long ago that I was shopping for a new fiddle – a fiddle made with carbon fiber. I was thinking that it would be a good fiddle to take places where my other fiddles might be at risk. I figured it could be fitted with things like geared pegs – that way it would always be tuned up. And if I wanted to change my tuning for another key, it would be very quick and easy. Based on what I have experienced – I’m not concerned about the tone of a carbon fiber fiddle being acceptable. I’ve watched and listened to enough videos to know that there is not a significant difference in tone qual ..read more

Weekly jam going well. Great fellowship, etc. A member apologized for a mistake. I recon he was the only one who heard it. I said, "No problem. Everyone knows how it goes, so we don't hear the mistakes." Another said to me, "therein lies the problem." I replied, "That's the reason my recordings are so bad." I'm essentially still the biggest fool because I still record myself and listen back. I must love that sickening feeling listening to one's self. Why beat myself up? I've been preaching this and not taking my own medicine. It answered a question. I was watching a YT live stream of a barn ja ..read more

Just wanted to leave a link for anybody interested! :-) I don't think it's been mentioned on FHO. https://swangathering.com/ Have friends going to "Celtic Week" and "Traditional Song" week. :-) There is "Fiddle Week", "Old-Time" week, ""Banjo/Mando" week and "Guitar" week as well!  ( I long to go, but playing for that many hours/day for 5 days in a row is going to inflame my old repetitive stress injury....and I don't want to regress to that sad time when I couldn't play ..read more

<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaaDSogS4Sk> There's a story that tells how the name was derived, but I forgot most of the deets. This comes from a Missouri fiddler (whose name I've also spaced) that he didn't have a name for at one time.I will also (very soon) upload John Salyer's The Rose In the Mountain. Then you can judge how similar the two tunes are. This one is a lot of fun to play ..read more
