The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent economic recession have left families across Texas facing a housing crisis. Many were forced to rely on community members and friends for support; relatively few were able to successfully navigate the often confusing patchwork of government-funded assistance programs.
In this photo essay from the Texas Tribune, three Texans were asked to explain what it was like to have their lives upended and how they have persevered through the economic upheaval caused by the pandemic.

The Dallas Eviction Advocacy Center will present at the upcoming Tenant Empowerment Workshop. In conjunction with the Center for Transforming Lives and Legal Aid of Northwest Texas, attorneys and panelists will provide information about landlord and tenant issues, including concerns around COVID-19 and eviction.
To participate most effectively, please have a copy of your lease and any other documents related to your questions or concerns on hand. There is no charge to attend, but pre-registration is required.

As of June 7, 2021, roughly 3.2 million people in the U.S. said they would face eviction within the next two months, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey. The survey measures the social and economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic every two weeks through online responses from a representative sample of U.S. households.

Tensions are rising nationwide between landlords and tenants. Despite a federal moratorium, landlords have filed more than 342,000 evictions during the pandemic, according to Princeton University's Eviction Lab.
More than 34,000 have been filed in the Dallas-Fort Worth area alone. Those facing eviction have a final chance to stay in their homes by making their case to a judge.
Jasmin Zuniga brought her 3-month-old daughter, Delilah, to court. "I wasn't paying my whole rent completely and that's when the late fees started," she told the judge.

I wanted to put a face on this eviction problem. This young, single mother is facing eviction after losing her job as a result of COVID several months ago. A few hours ago, her neighbor, another person we’re helping with an eviction, called me to let me know she was completely out of food. Her kids are just 2 and 4.
Thanks to some anonymous donors that have provided some discretionary funds to assist people like this young mother, we were able to take her some groceries just now to feed her children for the next week and will be able to help her catch up on past due rent.

When the Centers for Disease Control’s temporary residential eviction ban went into effect on September 4, those who work with renters worried some would fall through the cracks.
