Archdiocese of Chicago, University of St. Mary of the Lake and St. Clement Parish each received $1.25 million through Lilly Endowment’s national initiative.
Chicago, (April 4, 2024) – The Archdiocese of Chicago, the University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein and St. Clement Parish in Chicago each received a $1.25 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to be used for projects funded through Lilly Endowment’s Thriving Congregations Initiative. John Allen served as our guest speaker at this year’s two-part lecture on Thursday, March 7 at the Union League Club of Chicago and on Friday, March 8 at USML. Following the Friday presentation, Mr. Allen participated in a panel discussion with distinguished USML faculty members Rev. Emery A. de Gaál, Chairperson and Professor in the Departments of Dogmatic Theology and Pre-Theology and Theodore Whapham, Ph.D., Dean of the School of Parish Leadership and Evangelization.

2024 Paluch Lecture February 15, 2024
On February 15, 2024 USML hosted our annual Paluch Lecture with Dr. Massimo Faggioli, professor from the Department of Theology and Religious Studies at Villanova University (Philadelphia). The lecture framed the controversies about Vatican II in light of the massive changes in our sense of history or, in technical terms, our “regime of historicity” of “presentism”.

On Friday, January 26 through Sunday, January 28 Mundelein Seminary held its annual Fr. Pat O’Malley basketball tournament. 10 seminaries from across the country competed in Pool Play to earn a spot to play in the Championship Bracket.
St. Joseph Seminary from Covington, Louisiana, the Lakers from Mundelein Seminary, Sacred Heart Seminary from Franklin, Wisconsin, and Conception from Conception, Missouri played in the Championship bracket with St. Joseph Seminary placing 1st, Conception Seminary placing 2nd, and the Lakers from Mundelein Seminary placing 3rd.

On January 23, Bishop Michael McGovern from the Diocese of Belleville presided over the Acolyte Installation Mass, an annual ceremony for individuals aspiring to the priesthood, marking a significant step towards Holy Orders. In this ritual, seminarians undergo the installation as lectors first and then progress to acolytes in the subsequent year.
The role of the acolyte encompasses service at the altar, supporting the Priest and Deacon. This includes preparing the altar, handling sacred vessels, and, when necessary, distributing the Eucharist to the faithful as an extraordinary minister.

Pope Francis has appointed Mons. Anselm Pendo Lawani as Bishop for the Catholic Diocese of Ilorin in Nigeria. Bishop Lawani was ordained on August 15, 2000 and was subsequently awarded a Master of Divinity from the University of Saint Mary of the Lake. USML proudly congratulates Bishop Lawani for his appointment.
