Yamaha 225S, good for doubler? If so, should I get a better headjoint?

I recently got a Yamaha 225S (late 2000s/early 2010s) for $100 and my repair tech says it needs an overhaul. I’m mainly a sax/clarinet player but am planning to use this to double on for musicals/pit band shows. Is this a good flute for me to invest in for an overhaul or should I look towards another model instead? Also, I have read that a new head joint is very beneficial for the 225. Any particular head joint I should look for if so ..read more

My great grandma gave me this silver flute by Selmer and I was just wondering about it. I’m a pretty avid flute player in highschool and the flute produces quite a soft tone. The head joint reads Selmer and on the body near where the headjoint connects reads, Selmer, New York, 4452 ..read more

Thought this might interest some here. This is a Boehm flute body with the head of a Japanese shakuhachi. It was invented in the early part of the 20th century by Baron Okura, a Japanese aristocrat. Not many were made before increasing nationalism in Japan in the 1930s halted their production. This one is handmade, with a seamed tube, by a company called "Mirabilus Auditu“ in Tokyo, probably 100 years ago. It is open G#, and has some unique features. First, of course, is the end-blown head... Okraulo: hybrid shakuhachi/Boehm flute ..read more

Not really sure what the best sub-forum would be for this post but I figured I’d put it here since I think it might be most useful for SOTW members looking to get a flute. I have a couple of flutes already but have had an eye out for something a bit nicer than the standard Yamaha student flute I’ve been using for travel and jazz combo gigs where I’m just doubling flute on a few tunes and don’t want to worry about my Muramatsu walking off. I came across a Yamaha YFL-514 being offered by... Yamaha YFL-514 from Brasstek Japan ..read more

Vertical flute / flute ergonomics

I'm a long time single reed player (50 years) who's fairly recently taken up flute, with lessons from a flute player. I have a pre-existing ulnar nerve problem in both arms. Trying to think if there is a wind instrument that is worse ergonomically than the flute, and am not able to think of one. I've thought about getting a vertical flute headjoint, and have some questions and ponderings about them. At least as far as internet presence, there seem to be two makers - Drelinger in the USA... Hey gang, I'm an accomplished harmonica player on both diatonic and chromatic and have fooled some folks into allowing me to sit in on sax. I am self taught, and while I've been just starting to practice to perform Baker Street and Respect on sax, I have an opportunity to play the flute part on California Dreaming. Therefore, I am posting to get some suggestions as to what intermediate or beginner flutes I can buy to at least try to get a handle on quickly. The saxes I have include a... I would like to identify the model of this flute I have been playing off and on for 25 years without doing any maintenance. Still mechanically sound, but cork is starting to leak and probably needs new pads. I have been satisfied with the performance of the instrument otherwise, but I would like to assess whether the instrument is worth the $300 or so my local shop will charge for this work so that I can make a fully informed decision.
