Hiya, I've had a bit of a bumpy road getting my diagnosis (definitely did not find out in the ways I should have etc ahaha) but I've just been diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer which is in my left para isthmus. Because of this, I'm due to have surgery pretty quickly in just under 2 weeks to remove the left half of my thyroid. As far as I understand, this should hopefully be the end of it, (yay), but I have a follow up for the histology and staging etc after Christmas when I get back to uni. I've just turned 21 and I'm a second year uni student so I'm wondering how the surgery will affect ..read more

Hi , I had my RAI last Tuesday and I felt broadly fine. I thought to share my current experience as I also have children, 5yo and 7yo. I am finding it quite difficult to isolate from them at home, and I am glad that I made the decision to go to a hotel for a couple of nights after I left the hospital. I found it easier to be away from the kids than being at home with them but having to keep a metre away. Hope all goes well for you ..read more

Hello, I’m sorry to hear about your daughter and I know it is a stressful time. I had a total thyroidectomy about a year ago, I was in hospital for 3 nights, I think she’ll be in at least two, maybe more depending on the drains that they put in at the site of the surgery and whether the blood calcium levels are stable. I felt really well after, I had minimal problems. People’s accounts will vary quite a lot but it’s common for people to fare well and have successful treatment. I was kind of woozy from the anaesthetic and painkillers so I wasn’t really bored or needing lots of things for entert ..read more

Hello teena3 I hope you do not mind me responding to you as I had a different type of cancer to your daughter. By doing so it will hopefully bump your post so someone in a similar situation will see it and reply. I am sorry to hear that your daughter has had a diagnosis of thyroid cancer and I can understand how worrying it must be for you all. I think doing her a care package is a lovely idea and I am sure it will be much appreciated. When I had my diagnosis and treatments last year I must admit that I didn't always want to talk about it and partly that was a coping mechanism. I had to focus ..read more

Hello I am the mother of a 30ish daughter who is about to undergo a hemithyroidectomy soon. She is not one for details and I don't like to press her but I like to know as much as possible! I am going to go and support her when she comes out of hospital and want to make a care package. What kind of things would have been helpful to have? What should I expect ? What will she be able to eat etc? Also in case she has to go on and have the full removal and the radioactive iodine treatment. Roughly how long is the gap between all these things happening and how long must she keep away from everybody ..read more

Hi NMc Sorry for my late reply, I wasn’t sure if the chat thing was making me feel worse so haven’t looked for a month or so. I had my hemithyoidectomy a week ago and waiting again for results. I’m trying to be positive but struggling. Surgery was ok but I didn’t expect to feel so tired a week on. In my 50s so not bounced back as quickly as after previous anaesthetics. how do you feel now knowing it was cancer? Have you been able to put it to one side and accept it? hope the new job is going well. I was worried about my job as I work with children and have to do some teaching to colleagues. My ..read more
