Something I sometimes forget to do is actually consume the music of the contestants on the show. So I've been doing a deep dive into their catalogs on Spotify. This year's class (as Lionel would put it) has put out a LOT of good music and it seems like so few of them have gotten to show on Idol what kind of artists they really are.
Here are a few songs I've liked. I encourage you to post links to other songs you like from this season's contestants. Inevitably, in three weeks, most of America is going to forget all about most of these people, which is a shame, because most of their actual musi ..read more

Can we please get him to play a Charley Crockett song? I know, it's not a super well known country artist, but he would own it and I think it would be epic. Something like Welcome to Hard Times or Jamestown Ferry. It fits him and I would love to see it.

I stopped watching American Idol after season 12, so I don't know the current rules. But at the time, the judge's save expired at the top 5. Basically, the top 5 was the last week the judges could use the save. I feel like it's unfortunate the save couldn't be used in the top 4 weeks. The top 4 weeks are when the most shocking eliminations take place, like Tamyra Gray, Latoya London, Chris Daughtry, etc. Even top 3 weeks, we had some shock eliminations like Melinda Doolittle and Angie Miller. The save should be in play until before the finale. I feel like having the save expire at the top 5 w ..read more

Congratulations to everyone who’s moving on in the competition based on yesterday’s vote. After 1202 votes cast, we must sadly say goodbye to the 5 people who received the lowest number of votes. In no particular order, they are:
HunterGirl
Arthur Gunn
Cassandra Coleman
Jeramiah Lloyd Harmon
Julia Gagnon
On today’s ballot we narrow the Top 35 to the Top 30. For this round, you have up to 20 votes to spread out amongst the competition and can give up to one vote per contestant. The 5 people with the lowest number of votes will be eliminated. Voting for this round closes at 9am Eastern tomorrow ..read more

Lots seem to be calling her one, but being the granddaughter of a country artist doesn't inherently make Emmy one as well. She's certainly capable of performing country songs, and has done a few, but she's covered a variety of different artists (Bonnie Raitt, Selena Gomez, Blink-182, Benson Boone) that aren't country, and her style in general doesn't come across as overtly country at all to me.
Just compare Emmy to Phillip Phillips' recent guest performance, which was as stereotypically country as it gets. Her voice actually reminds me a great deal of Canadian artist Lights, who mostly does e ..read more
