Picked up these two hens advertised as reds. Once I got there the guy said he thought one was a brown. What does everyone think? Statistics: Posted by MADad — Wed Apr 10, 2024 9:37 pm ..read more

Recently, I was shown "crests" in breeds like the Chinese Owl and the Spanish Chorrera. # Reversal of Breast/Chest feathers. # Neck Collar frills # Wing Rosettes Screenshot_20240224-120456.png Screenshot_20240229-165309~2.png Statistics: Posted by Lotus — Thu Feb 29, 2024 11:07 am ..read more

got two more chicks and these are also indigo - so the ash red parent is very likely homozygous indigo - you cannot distinguish this bird from an ash-red T cheq. One day perhaps we can find out the molecular basis of this semi-dominant mutation. Obviously it is switching eumelanin (blue/black) to phaeomelanin (ash-red) production somehow. Probably in the heterozygous state the indigo allele results in phaeomelanin prouction while the wild-type allele results in eumelanin production (so both types of melanin, eu- and phaeo-, are present in the same melanocyte). Has anyone in the Pigeon Fancier community got this book? "Pigeon Genetics - Applied Genetics in the Domestic Pigeon" by Axel Sell (2012). I hv access to a copy of The Pigeon by WM Levi. However, I was told the more recent book by Axel Sell contains more up to date information. The WA State Library did a search, and no public library has Axel Sell's book. As this book is widely listed for sale on the internet, someone in the pigeon fancier community, the pigeon clubs or private institutions must have a copy of it. Would love to hear from those who have this book. Statistics: Posted by Lotus ..read more
