Using animated short films in speech therapy is a great way to work on comprehension, inferencing, retell, summarizing and so much more! I’m linking some of my favorites! Preheated: This one is about a boy whose father is a scientist. It is his father’s birthday and he tries to make him a cake. There is a mishap though that makes for some The Present: This is the story of a boy who spends his time indoors playing video games instead of discovering what’s waiting outside. One day his mom decides to get a little surprise for her son. Snack Attack: This one is about an elderly lady who gets a s ..read more

1099 vs. W2 for SLPs

As an SLP, I’ve worked as both a 1099 and W2. There’s a lot of talk about the difference between the two. I personally prefer to be a W2 mainly because you don’t have to worry about setting aside taxes, but there are more things to consider than just that. I’m going to break it down for you! 1099: -You are referred to as an independent contractor. -You fill out a 1099 form -Taxes are NOT withheld, which means you need to make sure you save part of your income so you’re not surprised when tax time comes around. It depends on your state, but in Virginia, my CPA recommended setting aside 38% of ..read more

Teaching Skills in Speech Therapy

Too often, I think we as SLPs get caught up in the data side of speech and forget we have to teach the skills first. I’m definitely guilty of this! A few years ago, I set out to put together a resource that would help me introduce and TEACH the skills to students. The first teaching binder I made was my Intro-Vention Teaching Binder. This one is a little different than the others because I also have accompanying flip books. More on that later. There are 17 skills including: subjective pronouns, possessive pronouns, present progressive verbs, regular past tense verbs, irregular past tense verb ..read more

Clinical Skills Confidence: Am I In the Right Setting?

Hello and welcome to another Clinical Skills Confidence post! To check out other posts in this series, check out more here. Today, I want to chat about whether you’re in the right setting. I can only speak to the two settings I’ve worked in professionally (schools and private practice). I did an internship in the medical setting in graduate school, but since I never actually worked in one myself, I can’t speak to that setting. So let’s chat. Everyone is different, so the right setting for you may not be the right setting for someone else. I’ve moved back and forth from the schools to private ..read more

My son is now 24 months old! I shared my 12-18 month toy recommendations months ago, and I wanted to add to it. Disclaimer: Affiliate links are included for your convenience. If you make a purchase via one of these links, I receive a small percentage.  I have been very intentional about the toys I’ve purchased this time around. We still have some from when my daughter was younger and I have not gone nuts adding toys. I’ve been doing toy rotation with two bins. I will rotate the bins every week or every two weeks (I sometimes forget). This has cut way down on the amount of toys we need. P ..read more

Speech Material Organization in My Home Office

This past school year, I ended up being fully virtual and doing teletherapy. Since I didn’t need my physical materials, I had them all boxed up in my basement office space. I also had 4 jobs, as I had to piece together contracts. I recently took a new, in person job with a different private practice. I needed to unbox my materials and organize them so that I’d have easier access to grab what I needed and go. Time to organize! Disclaimer: Affiliate links are included for your convenience. My son is now 19 months old, but I wanted to share our favorite 12-18 month toy recommendations. Let me preface this by saying that this time around, I was extremely careful with the toys I bought him. I don’t love a ton of toys cluttering the house, as I found that both kids don’t play with anything if there’s a ton of them. I started toy rotation with my son and it has been working really well. We have two bins of toys that I rotate each week. Of course, I’ve changed them as he’s grown up. These are some things we got for his birthday and Christmas!
