This time of year, in my house, we love cuddling up with a good cup of hot chocolate, a blanket, and a good book! This is also a great time to talk with our students about the types of warm drinks they enjoy, why would a warm drink be good when the weather begins to chill, and what they may like to add to hot chocolate (whipped cream, marshmallows, sprinkles, peppermint shavings, etc..). I have them linked below in case you are interested in expanding your resources for a hot chocolate theme. Winter is not my favorite season because I do not do so well in the cold. However, I do love the looks of snow and pulling out snow-themed activities and resources for speech! Where I grew up, it never snowed. I never had the chance to experience a ‘snow day’. My daughter considers herself lucky that she has been fortunate enough to experience a few. However, now that Covid-19 has changed the face of education, snow days for our area may be a thing of the past. According to her school, if students have to remain home due to inclement weather, they will continue to attend school virtually for ..read more

Winter-Themed Activities and Resources for Speech and Language Therapy It is beneficial to the students that we pull in winter-themed activities and resources to supplement their own experiences with the change in season. If it does not snow where you live (or get remarkably cold), the use of stories, videos, songs, and other resources can help provide our students to establish background knowledge about the season. If you do happen to live where it gets cold or snows during this season, encourage your students and their families to bundle up and explore the season using their five senses so t ..read more

Valentine’s Day Themed Activities and Resources for Speech and Language Therapy Do you need new Valentine’s Day-themed activities and resources for your speech and language therapy sessions? I know for the longest time, I would have my students create valentine’s day cards for their parents and while doing so we would target their articulation sounds, language used to follow directions and give instructions, etc… Although that is still an engaging and functional activity for my students, it does get exhausting doing it session after session and year after year. Check out below for the resource ..read more

Brrr… it is starting to get really cold here. How is the weather where you are? Where I grew up in California, it was never very chilly. Now, that I live in North Carolina, my family actually gets to play in the snow. To be honest, though, I am not a big fan of cold cars that take a long time to warm up. I have them linked below books, songs, videos, games, and freebies with winter clothing themes in case you are interested in expanding your resources. Winter Ideas for Families to Build Speech and Language Skills I like to share winter ideas for families that build and maintain speech and language skills without adding “extra” homework and keep families engaged and having fun while targeting articulation, language, and/or fluency. Once students no longer need to work at the drill level to practice their speech and language skills, I like to provide my families with different examples of fun free or low-cost activities that they can engage in as a family to target skills in a natural context. Here are a few examples for the Winter season. MAK ..read more
