Hey there, As I'm getting heavy into tying. I'm finding my tying material is starting to stack up. I've got all kinds of plastic bins, stacked under and above my desk, but nothing that can store all the long flat stuff that I use most(packs of dubbing, hackle, peacock, etc.)that still provides easy access. I would love to find a smallish chest of flat drawers that can sit on my desk at the ready that doesn't break the bank. What are you guys using? I'm not a fan of those plastic office... I was fishing the Holy Water stretch about a week ago and this letter feller floated past me. Too small and early to be a salmon fly or golden stone, but unfamiliar with the other stonefly species in the river ..read more

Lake mayfly

There was a massive hatch of these coming off the lake yesterday. Now we were fishing for stocked trout so I'm sure they had no clue what was up. Fish were suspended, so no one fishing bottom or power bait was having any luck. But once I put one of these on under a float on the spin rods for the boys they were in business too. No pic's, I was too busy. So one of the guys down the way came down and asked why my flies were catching fish, and they... Read more ..read more

Little Beadhead SimiSeal Leech

I've been using this leech this year, another that I favored last year isn't working so well. Materials: Bead, thread color and simiseal, your choice. This combo has been good however, or brown with a gold bead. Add bead to hook and lay thread base, Even ends of simiseal, measure to body length, and tie in up shank to secure bead then fold over and wrap back. Pluck, trim to length place simiseal in a dubbing loop, twist around for short, or place fibers... Read more ..read more

Well it took over 45 years, but my tying abilities have outgrown my vice, and the old Thompson B just won't hold a hook at all. I tried a Montana mongoose and a Peak, but went with a regal rotary. Coming UPS, so should be here by end of next week ..read more

I was organizing flies and found this. It was tied and given to me by Preston Singletary (RIP) at Chopaka lake nearly 20 years ago. The callibaetis were coming off pretty decent that trip. Damsels, too. I’ve never been back to that lake, not that I had a bad time. It’s just a haul ..read more

Reattaching marabou tails.
PNW Fly Fishing » Fly Tying and Entomology

Being in the cheapskate division of old, lazy, fly tiers, I "try" to reattach marabou tails. This could be for those flies with few strands remaining. Or, it could be that for some zen type feeling I feel the need to remove a "now" non-desirable color in favor of a mystical new concoction that will surely up the numbers. What ever the reason I find the job troublesome. I try to tie a finishing knot at the butt of the fly which presents its problems in process. The finished product looks... Read more ..read more
