If you could only pick 5 materials

Hook doesn’t count, and neither does the thread. If you only could tie with five materials for the next year, what would they be? I tie small to medium size dry flies and my choices would be: 1: CDC - almost everything I tie involves CDC, I could honestly get by with CDC and thread. 2: Zelon - trailing shucks, wings. Definitely could use Antron or myriad others, but I pick Zelon if I get to pick. 3: Short, Coarse, Deer Hair - wings for sparkle duns, caddis, midges, specifically for... Hook Identification

Through a series of unrelated events I have ended up with a broad selection of various hooks of different sizes and types. I would really like to organize these so that I can choose an appropriate hook for a fly without rummaging through them every time I want a certain size or style. Is there a reference anyone can point to that will help? Ideally something I could print in actual size so I could lay a hook on it and know what I have. I could then separate and label them. Thank you ..read more

Who uses these and why? I have never used though do like a number of nymphs tied with beads and/or using appropriate size scud hooks. I understand the 'theory' for their use, but also question the realized utility as put forth below: https://troutbitten.com/2020/03/15/nymph-hook-inversion-and-the-myth-of-the-jig-hook ..read more

Administrators, please feel free to delete if I'm violating copyright laws. I made this up so I'd have a handy guide when I'm tying flies. It's got sizing diagrams for thread, wire, weights. I hope it helps, especially those new to fly tying. Consider them guidelines, not to be taken as gospel ..read more

Do you have problems with the fibers matting together after fishing for 10 -15 minutes? I have used these as wings on caddis and BWO and they look and float well for a short time but then become matted and hard to fluff back into shape. I have tried powdered fly floatant (fumed hydrophobic silica) and blowing the material dry with limited success. Your experience with this material is appreciated ..read more

I just received an email from one of the fly shops I frequent. It was for Whiting Cree necks. Price $175 - $275 per neck. I’ll protect the name of the shop…. but there is another famous shop and well known face of the Industry that said he does this on a YouTube post a while back. He’s jumping the 3rd party eBay mark up marketplace. What are your thoughts on this? Mine? I thinks it’s bs. That fly tying materials are grossly marked up to make a buck. ….. but the free market... What do y'all use the feathers with the vertical white stripe on the wing for? I use a lot of the soft hackle type feathers from my hide but haven't seen anyone use those wing feathers and I'd love to utilize more of the bird and maybe even learn a new pattern or 2 in the process ..read more

The first 3 months saw a huge level of participation from the membership but it seems that I hit the ceiling in April. This month as of the 14th we have but 6 entries The Ginger Quill dry fly actually is a very old and very useful pattern for an angler to have in their box regardless of their location. While acquiring the knack for creating the mallard wings can be a challenge it does not come without rewards. Among those supposed rewards are: Given the diversity of May Fly hatches...
