GECO Project organized two back-to-back events in Tuscany, Italy on 16 – 21 May 2022. After two years of online activities and meetings, members of the project finally managed to meet in person last month in Italy and enjoy together a great week of live discussions and exchange, as well as training and knowledge transfer. Indeed, the first part of the week was dedicated to an internal workshop that tackled the intellectual property and business case of GECO technologies and results. Within the WP6, IFPEN (Vlasios Leontidis) and STORENGY (Maxime Pithon & Emmanuelle Themiot) were welcomed by ISOR (Sveinborg Gunnarsdottir & Gunnar Skúlason Kaldal) and Carbfix (Nokkvi Andersen) in Iceland to visit the demo site of Hveragerði. Two days of constructive and fruitful discussions took place concerning the design and fabrication of the closed-loop test unit (under development by STORENGY), the geothermal site (ISOR & Carbfix), the design of the injection well completion (Carbfix) and the two-phase injection tests (ISOR & IFPEN) planned to take place in 2022 ..read more

One of the GECO demonstration sites that was planned to be in Castelnuovo in Tuscany, Italy, has been moved to Hveragerði, Iceland. This is because of permitting issues that would have delayedCO2 injection and geothermal fluid reinjection. However, feasibility studies characterizing the geology and modelling potential future injection will still be conducted for the original Castelnuovo site. The site in Hveragerði is near to the other two Icelandic demo sites – Hellisheiði and Nesjavellir power plants. Like those areas, Hveragerði contains a basaltic reservoir is part of the high temperature ..read more

Geothermal drilling has started in GECO’s Demonstration site in Bochum, at the Fraunhofer IEG geothermal facility! The first 100 m were drilled using the casing drilling method, for which a specially developed casing advancer system was used. In addition, the open borehole has been geophysically surveyed several times with very good results and we have succeeded in installing a fiber optic cable in the annulus between the borehole wall and the steel casing down to a depth of 266 m without damaging it. It is currently used for temperature monitoring . Drilling will continue when frost has thaw ..read more
