Hello, I am looking for some suggestions on the best practices for dealing with hung leaners such as the one shown in the photos. This one hanging over a hiking trail. The situation is tricky as there is still significant tension/force from the root ball trying to stand the tree back up. Thanks, Steve ..read more

http://www.odmp.org/officer/22038-officer-jason-crisp http://charlotte.twcnews.com/conten...and-elderly-couple-dead-in-burke-co--shooting This happened in the next county just to the north of us. Sounds like a very sad story. What I'm trying to figure out is what the officers job was. I'm guessing park ranger... maybe. Best I can tell from the news stories, the suspect killed his parents. He then fled in a stolen car then abandoned a vehicle... Read more ..read more

Hello, I need help with choosing which knot to use for my application. I'm a newbie with this stuff. We are pulling tree stumps on the farm using ropes and pulleys for mechanical advantage. I purchased 200 feet of Notch Kraken 5/8 rope (18,000 lb tensile), several 3/4 clevises, several snatch blocks, and tree saver straps... all rated for some pretty high forces. We're using the farm tractor to pull on the rope. So I learned how to splice a loop in the end of the Kraken... Read more ..read more

Hey all, Can you guys help my out with some definitions/job descriptions, please? I am interested in becoming a timber cruiser (I think). Do I HAVE to go to school, or can I do my own studying? A little bit of background is I have been working for myself doing tree removal for the past year and a half. Now I am on my second week of running a skidder for a small logging operation. I am very intrigued with the logging industry so far, and I think I would like to look into making a career... Read more ..read more

Falling wedges. What's good, what's not, and why?

Got some big boys (by my standards) to drop and now's as good a time as any to learn what makes for a great felling wedge and what sizes to get. I've a few small wedges and a bunch of holding wedges that I must admit to driving in but they don't last long doing that. What do you use and why? I'm inclined to want to try a few that I can seriously drive in without them mushrooming beyond recognition. there are metal headed wedges. Any good for this, or should I just try and find a few...
