We take quality control very seriously here at Nautilus Puzzles. The puzzles are produced in small batches, and every puzzle is checked for number of pieces before leaving our warehouse, so start by assuming the piece is somewhere in your living room. With wooden jigsaw puzzles especially, it may seem as if there is a missing piece as you are getting close to completing the puzzle. That's actually a good sign. If you are convinced there is a piece missing, but at the end you are able to complete the puzzle, it is just the right amount of challenging! If you get to the end and there is a puzzle ..read more

Have you ever opened a brand new wooden jigsaw puzzle and noticed a distinct, toasty aroma? That's coming from the wood! Our wooden jigsaw puzzles are laser cut. The bright beam of the laser cuts a tiny path through the wood to form the edges of each special shaped piece. This allows us to design dozens of intricate whimsy pieces for each puzzle! Nautilus puzzles are made without harmful chemicals. We use formaldehyde-free birch/bass plywood, archival paper, and soy-based inks and adhesives. Like the smell of a summer campfire, the scent of the laser burning through the wood lingers for a few ..read more

History of the Jigsaw Puzzle
Nautilus Puzzles Blog

Jigsaw puzzles have been around for years. The earliest form of jigsaw puzzles is believed to have been created by an engraver and cartographer, John Spilsbury, in 1760. Puzzles were created initially as a way to teach history to kids. Puzzle creators would place maps on slabs of hardwood and cut along national boundaries. This way, kids could have the fun of putting the map back together in the form of a puzzle while also learning its history and places.  The irony of the puzzle’s history is that jigsaw puzzles were never first created with a jigsaw. Puzzles were created initially with a ..read more

Nautilus Puzzles Blog

Jigsaw puzzles have always been a popular activity for individuals and families. It wasn’t until our worldwide pandemic hit where jigsaw puzzle sales flew through the roof. This sudden demand for puzzles didn’t seem to surprise puzzle historians, as this was a similar trend during the Great Depression.  Under quarantine order, families were forced to spend most days inside and build a new daily routine that protected them from the global disease. The global pandemic disrupted our usual schedules, and we would reclean the kitchen just to feel like we’ve done something for the day. The new ..read more
