Hey guys-looking for some advice. My grandma is 92 and due to having some issues with her kids I'm managing her assets. Her physical health is good, however she also has stage 6 dementia (there's a total of 7 stages). The average life expectancy for someone with this is 4 years or fewer. This is not age adjusted A big more below: Her expenses are about $4,500. She has $1300 in social security-bringing her net expenses to about $3,200/month     Her asset base is about 600K and it's currently all in a hysa earning about 4.8%. This creates about $2,400/month on a pretax basis so we can ..read more

Question about in-the-money puts versus ATM

I'm sure the answer is obvious, but I couldn't find a satisfying answer with a search. Obviously I'm an options neophyte.   Example: Tesla stock price is $157. The April 26 $175 puts cost $20. Meaning I need the stock to be at 175-20= $155 to break even. A $2 drop from the current price. Right?    Meanwhile, the April 26 $157 puts (ATM) cost $8...which is a $149 break-even price...now you need the stock to drop $8 to break even.   What am I missing? Aren't the $175 puts a much better deal?  ..read more

Bloomberg - Markets [April 16th 2024] : Fire Engulfs Copenhagen Landmark Old Stock Exchange Building.   This is an event for Denmark and Cpenhagen comparable to what happened in Paris to Notre Dame now five years ago.   The old stock Exchange building is about 400 years old and is a landmark building in Copenhagen. The building was under renovation, and it  has functioned and served as the HQ and premises for Dansk Erhverv [translates from Danish to English to "Danish Chamber of Commerce", which is a quite powerfull Danish network for companies within Retail, Service ..read more

Bad Management?

I wanted to ask at what point do you think that a company’s management is adequate enough to buy a stock. I feel like I’m constantly seeing a large amount of undervalued companies with the caveat being managements that refuse to return any money to shareholders. I’m starting to think that this could possibly be the most important aspect of what differentiates a good investment from a bad one.   I really want to emphasize just how many managements I see that refuse returning any money, it’s crazy. I’m assuming that it’s from a standpoint of preserving their job but isn’t their job to ultim ..read more

Russia-Ukrainian War

Given this is a geopolitcal event driving equity values everywhere right now - it deserves its own thread on an investing forum. I'll start it off (stolen from a post i did in a Taiwan thread):   The Ukraine invasion at a base level is about a petro-dollar economy, in the age of decarbonization, that is strategically weak already but for sure to be weaker still in decades.......... re-asserting a buffer zone (Ukraine & Belarus) that was laid down after the fall of the USSR, implicitly blessed by the USA and the West as being strategically important for Russian security in the age of t ..read more

Stocks that did well 2000-12 (when S&P500 was flat)

There's a near generation who've worked since 2009 & are used to 'stocks only going up'.   But older people (or people who know their history) know that the S&P topped in 2000 and didn't make a new high until 2012 (apart from  maybe a moment in 2007).  So 12-year returns were FLAT excluding Dividends.   And this perhaps belies the increasing feeling that most people should index.   So IF this were to happen again (e.g. if things got really crazy with Crypto etc. again in the next 12/24m), I was trying to think what stocks did well in that period, as I wasn't pa ..read more
