401k for new office, have solo 401k currently

I am starting up a dental speciality office slated to open in July. I used to be an independent contractor a couple years back and had a solo 401k. The solo 401k did not have any contributions this year. I want to offer a 401k to employees, but probably not this year since income will be very little. I was just letting the money ride with Vanguard, but got a letter today saying they are moving the plan to Ascensus. Not sure if I should just let it transfer over to them or pick someone else. Is it maybe time to sit down with someone that can form and administer a 401k plan for the office with m ..read more

OBGYN covering FP-OB

Need some advice about a situation. I am one of 4 hospital employed obgyns at a rural facility in a small town. It was a family practice dominated hospital so getting to this point has taken 20 years as each of the family practitioners in town (except one) stopped doing obstetrics. It felt like turning the titanic. We have covered some call as needed for the sole remaining solo FP-OB in private practice as a courtesy for the past few years. He is now 72 and a great guy and a good friend but his style of ob is different from obgyn in many ways, like no gdm testing and a much higher tolerance f ..read more

Annuity options (RILA vs. VA) for 1035 exchange of whole life policy

Wanted to see if anyone with more experience could weigh in: I bought into WLI right out of fellowship, am working on my financial literacy and planned to do a 1035 exchange into a Fidelity VA and accept my very high idiot tax as an important lesson (Cost basis ~100k, cash value ~30k, also had a smaller one for my wife that will just be cashed out). I brought this up to the advisor who sold it to me as part of a larger conversation of bringing my Roth (few years of backdoor) and taxable brokerage under my control. He suggested the Allianz Index Advantage+ VA which from what I can tell is a R ..read more

Any photographers on the forum? Just looking for some other thoughts. Not sure if it was discussed before. It's a hobby like many others and I find it an enjoyable "add on" to what I already like- hiking, cycling, travel and birds. I know some/many may rely on cell phones. No debate there. I already have a cell phone most of the time, but find that shooting RAW (unprocessed files) with a dedicated DSLR or mirrorless camera to be enjoyable. I accept the weight and complexity trade off when traveling. I also enjoy post processing with lightroom and photoshop, so it's not the same with most c ..read more

Got married last year and merging finances together. I have my own taxable brokerage account and Roth IRA at Vanguard. My spouse has only her Roth IRA at Vanguard. For extra money left over at the end of the month wanted to invest it into the taxable brokerage. Are you all creating a joint taxable brokerage or just using one spouse's account ..read more

When to Change Asset Allocation Without Locking In Losses? + Bonus Rollover Question
The White Coat Investor Forum

Hi WCI. I am a relatively new DIY investor and have been trying to do this myself for the last 1.5 years. Previously I was using a Robo-advisor via Wealthfront. I have since realized I have way more international stocks within Wealthfront than I would like. My ideal asset allocation has 20% international stocks, and some of my Wealthfront accounts have close to 45% international stocks. So my question is the following: what is the best way to change this asset allocation without locking in losses? These international stocks are way down compared to when I bought them several years ago. Should ..read more

Life insurance $ if saving 20% of gross?
The White Coat Investor Forum

Does the % of gross that you're saving towards retirement/FI affect the duration of term life insurance that makes sense? For example, I'm early career and have $2M 20 year term insurance that I bought in training. Now that we have attending-level expenses in a VHCOL area, $2M sounds low. I'm trying to decide if: 1) I have enough insurance for the first 20 years (I don't think so) 2) whether to ladder a longer policy to extend the coverage to 30 years (unsure) I have a pre-existing condition that makes insurance more expensive. At 5% real, 20 years from now I project we'll have ~$5M in ret ..read more

Health insurance once marrying

Background: I am about to get married and am considering what will be the best health insurance option for my spouse and me. We are going to combine assets once married and plan to file taxes jointly. I have very little health costs and go to PCP once per year (currently have HSA). My future spouse goes regularly to physicians for MSK manipulation, PT, few urgent care office visits, takes a few medications (currently has HMO with reasonable copays, probably 2 visits per month 15-30 dollar copays, and very reasonable pharmacy coverage so spending maybe 10 per month at pharmacy). Our employer o ..read more
