Smiling through the rain Written by Nick Rowe
It’s lashing down, the wind is howling, and the
forecast is horrendous – the perfect day for
Dorset Mind’s Big Walk, just 26 miles from
Sandbanks to Mudeford Quay and back –
makes complete sense.
I must admit when I left home in the dark, I was
questioning my own sanity – surely it was more
a day for holing up by the fire and watching movies.

World Mental Health Day It’s time to act…
It’s World Mental Health Day on 10th October every year.
We usually emphasise the power of talking – as our vision
is to create a community where living with and talking
about Mental Health becomes acceptable for everyone…
But this year is different.
We’re asking people to take ownership of their wellbeing
and make an effort to take action.
Whether it’s reaching out to someone for a help, finding out
what support is available locally, fundraising or volunteering
for us – or even leaving a gift in your will; these positive actions

Suicide Prevention
needs to be done every day. Understanding more about suicide could
be vital in preventing it…
The topic of suicide is a critically sensitive
issue that must be taken seriously, and together,
as a society, we can help to prevent it. Each year,
valuable lives are lost to suicide resulting in loved
ones and communities being struck with devastating
grief.
But if we can understand the importance of
mental health and strive to be a more empathetic
society, we can save lives and reduce the stigma
around these issues.

Prevention Day on
10th September Learn how to have a potentially
life-saving conversation…
It’s not always obvious if someone is having
suicidal thoughts – and it’s not easy to know
what to say to support someone who’s struggling.
But we can all learn simple but vital skills to talk
to someone if we’re worried they’re thinking
about suicide.

National Grief
Awareness Day falls
on 30th November
each year. It’s a day designed to raise awareness
about the grieving process and time it
takes. This year, we’re emphasising that
grief is unique to each person.
Here’s a special blog, describing grief felt by someone
experiencing it for the first time. You’ll find signposting
at the bottom of this article.
I used to call my grandad “granan” when I was little as
I couldn’t quite say grandad. He was a London black cab

It’s nearly September, which means the return of early
starts,chilly mornings and darker evenings.
A tough farewell to warm grass, beautiful long sunsets
and beach days. When we had them! Summer is almost
over for another year, and back-to-school season is
looming fast.
With grateful thanks to our blogger and volunteer,
Annabel Goddard, for sharing her thoughts
and experience.
