Feedback 2: You can do better than a sandwich

Around two years ago I wrote a post (https://warhammeradjacent.wordpress.com/2021/04/05/on-feedback/) about feedback in modelling, it was very much a topic of conversation on the podcast circuit and is an area I have taken significant interest in because of my day job teaching. It was probably one of my more popular posts and generated some interesting comments, some of which I have been pondering since. More recently I’ve seen feedback reappearing as a discussion topic in the modelling community and thought it might be worth focusing some of those thoughts into another post. Sandwiches aren’t ..read more

Lanmo VVSS Dozer Review

I don’t often do reviews because there are usually better qualified people who’ve got there before me, in this case however I can’t find anything other than ‘in box’ reviews and so I thought I might offer some points based on my build of this rather lovely kit. Before I get into construction there are a couple of things to note; firstly there are two versions of the kit, one for HVSS and one for VVSS Shermans, I bought the latter. Secondly I think at the moment the kit is only available from China, I ordered mine on Ebay from lanmomodel and was pleasantly surprised by how quickly it arrived, c ..read more

A Commander’s Duty – an experiment in storytelling

The Plastic Posse podcast sometimes discuss ‘opus builds’, meaning (I think) a project that is to be your ‘great work’. This project is something that I’ve been pondering for a while and is probably a first attempt at my ‘opus build’. The idea stems from a story regarding a former RSM of my regiment whilst he was commanding a vehicle in Afghanistan. During a patrol their troop took several casualties and his vehicle was used to transport them to a helicopter landing site to be evacuated. Once this had been done he sent off his soldiers to get some food, they returned to find he had cleaned the ..read more

Scale collectables 1/10th British Chindit 1943 Bust Review

I’m having a weird couple of months; I think the issue is that I’ve got too many projects on the go and so I’m struggling to maintain enthusiasm for any of them individually. As a result I have struggled a little with this project and it’s taken longer than it normally would to complete. The bust is 3d printed by Scale Collectables (available here: shop link), I have to say their service was fantastic and the bust was with me very quickly. It required almost zero cleanup and is a lovely piece of work, with some great textures and a good look overall. One thing I like about the figure is that h ..read more

This is a really thought provoking piece by Chris, he has picked some fantastic examples to look at too. https://modelphilosopher.com/is-it-art-though/?fbclid=IwAR1vfnUtYP1XdgTanhUhOxz_QXZ-kwwb1wGqPGm3qCerCpzDHiRWP55FLrM_aem_AdiCGfUFWylWOaYgmCPZcK5o_MXq27DneaHEoOLFsHNdKXpnohvhpN0ww-Zi16ersQQ ..read more

I’ve been pretty bad at updating this recently and so I thought it was probably time to give a rundown of my builds over the last few months. I’m going to divide it into categories rather than in chronological order because it makes more sense, I’ll also include the ‘shelf of doom’ builds to encourage me a little bit. Figures After finishing the Sheffield Pal I found myself a little addicted to busts and so I picked up a couple from e-bay and completed them in tandem. The first is a Young Models bust of Jack Aubrey from the books (at least I’ve interpreted it this way as he is slightly tubbier ..read more

Commissions

Over the last couple of years a few people have commissioned me to make models for them and I thought it was probably worth making a page to outline my approach to commission work. If you would like me to make something please have a read through the FAQ below and if you are happy please feel free to get in touch. What can I build? Most of my commission builds so far have been armour although I’ve done several aircraft too. I’ve also been getting more and more into figures and sci-if subjects so if your project falls into any of those categories please ask. My main caveat is that I will gene ..read more

I was prompted to start this project following a recent visit to the battlefields of the First World War with work. We had a day planned to travel through the Somme region and I managed to persuade the trip leader to take a small detour via Sheffield City Park near Serre. The site marks the point from which the 12th (Sheffield City) Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment went over the top on the 1st July 1916, a poignant site for anyone from Sheffield. I have visited before, on the 90th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, but whilst reading about the events of that fateful day I deci ..read more

The story of Bourrasque and her crew, from 1st Company, 2nd Platoon, 15e BCC

The Tamiya Char B1bis is a great kit to build but there’s an aspect to this diorama that I haven’t really posted about on here or on social media and that’s the story of the vehicle I have attempted to imitate. It’s a fascinating story, fairly typical for French Char B1s during the Battle of France and frankly moved me rather more than the stories behind previous builds. With that in mind I thought I’d share a little of the story of Bourrasque and her crew, from 1st Company, 2nd Platoon, 15e BCC. By the 17th May 1940 Bourrasque and her crew had been operating without sleep for more than 2 days ..read more
